Nov. 21 2024 BMC Infection control and Quality assurance/Diagnostic Oral Radiology Sterilization and disinfection of instruments Critical instruments – penetrate soft tissue/bone Semi-critical instruments – contact but not penetrate tissue or bone e.g. films, sensors Noncritical instruments –not come in contact with mucosa – E.g. position indicating device – Exposure panel – Lead apron Procedure before exposure Preparation of treatment area – X ray machine – cover with plastic – Dental chair – disinfect or cover with plastic – Work area - wipe with disinfectants – Lead apron – wipe with disinfectants Patient preparation – Chair adjustment – Headrest adjustment – Lead apron – Patients objects like eyeglasses dentures, chewing gum should be removed by patient Preparation of operator – Hand washing – Gloves – Mask/eyewear – Beam alignment device remove from sterilized packages before patient Procedure during exposure Use paper towels to dry the saliva from films Place them in the disposable cups Carry the films to dark room for procedures Do not touch the films with gloved hands Place films in safe area to avoid film fog Procedure after exposure Disposal of contaminated items – discard cotton rolls, bitewing tabs, cups with gloved hands Place the BIDs in designated area Remove gloves and wash hands and then remove the lead apron Sensors may get contaminated while – in oral cavity due to tear in the barriers – During sensor preparation – While removing from mouth due to contaminated gloves Never heat sterilize the sensors Dry the sensor after exposure to remove excess saliva or blood Wipe the sensors with recommended disinfectants and dry them with sterile cotton or sponge PSP plates – Tear the barrier and allow them to drop in light- tight box – Do not touch the plates with contaminated gloves Common problems in digital images OH.ae oEe Noisy Images Noisy appearance occur when underexposed wired sensor produce digital image compared with the properly exposed wired sensor. PSP image degradation may result due to excessive exposure to ambient light between image acquisition and plate scanning Noisy Images Properly exposed image Damaged Image Receptors – Scratched phosphor surface Distorted Images Bending of PSP plates during intraoral placement: Double exposure PSP image artifact resulting from plate surface contamination Thank You
