**RELIGIOUS STUDIES** **WEEK 9: LESSON 17** **[GRADE 9 (BJC REVISION)]** **Topic: The Parable of the Sower and the Seed** **Read: Luke 8: 4-15** **Objectives:** At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Define the term 'parable'. 2. Explain **TWO** reasons why Jesus used parables. 3. List the **FOUR** grounds in which the seed fell and their outcomes. 4. Explain the meaning of the various grounds in which the seed fell. 5. Discuss **THREE** lessons one can learn from the Parable of the Sower and Seed. **Vocabulary:** - **Sower** -- a farmer - **Parable** - **an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.** In other words, they are stories that use everyday things or situations to describe spiritual things. Parables can also be defined as short stories that Jesus told to teach a lesson and stories that teaches biblical truths. **Reasons why Jesus used Parables** 1. To explain His teachings 2. To teach about what God wants by using familiar things 3. To make a comparison between heavenly and earthly situations 4. To catch the attention of people so that they can learn from it 5. To confuse the religious leaders of His day e.g. Pharisees A sower threw seeds across the field and they fell in four different places or types of soil. **The Four kinds of soil are:** a. Wayside path b. Rocky ground c. Thorn bushes d. Good soil **The Outcome/result of the seeds** a. Seeds that fell on the wayside were eaten by the birds b. Seeds that fell on the rocky ground were burnt by the sun c. Seeds that fell among the thorn bushes were choked d. Seeds that fell on good ground grew and multiplied **The Meaning of the Parable** The **seed** represents the **Word of God**. The Word of God is like the seeds spreading everywhere but does not always have the same success. It is heard by different groups of people who respond in different ways. The **sower** is the **person who speaks the Word of God.** The different **types of soil** are the many **types of hearts** that hear the Word of God. **The Outcome of the Word** a. The seeds that fell on the wayside stand for those people who have **Wayside hearts**. They hear the Word of God, but do not understand. As a result, Satan comes, (just like the birds in the parable) and takes the message. b. The seeds that fell on rocky ground stand for those people who have **Rocky hearts**. They hear the Word of God and gladly receive it but give up when hard times and testing come. c. The seeds that fell among the thorn bushes stand for those people who have **Thorny hearts**. They hear the Word of God but give up because of worries, troubles and riches d. The seeds that fell on the good soil, stand for those persons who have **Productive hearts.** They hear the Word of God, share it with others and make more disciples. [ **Soils/heart Outcome of seed Outcome of the Word**] -------------- -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wayside/Path They have Wayside Hearts because they allow Satan to take the message/Word away Rocky Ground They have Rocky Hearts because they give up during hard times and testing Thorn bushes They have Thorny Hearts because they give up because of worries and riches Good Soil They have Productive hearts because they share God's Word and make more disciples -------------- -- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
