It is made of PTFE-treated pressure-cast aluminium and polyamide. The Juicy Salif has become recognised as a design classic. The aim of the design was to present the Juicy Salif as high-quality silverware. Starck is rumoured to have claimed that the Juicy Salif "is not meant to squeeze lemons, it is meant to start conversations."** **Figure 8: The Alessi Juicy Salif lemon squeezer designed by Philippe Starck** [Source: www.starck.com. Employ a product champion C. Multidisciplinary approach D. Monodisciplinary approach **The Jerrycan, see Figure 10, was developed in Germany in the 1930s for military use. It became a much sought-after item because it was engineered to a much higher standard than the competition and contained many innovative features, including indentations in the walls that allowed for expansion and increased strength, and a handle design that allowed it to be carried by one or two people. Its iconic status is demonstrated by continued availability of and the use of the term "Jerrycan" in reference to all fuel containers.** **Figure 10: The Jerrycan** [Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jerrycan.JPG] What term best describes the Jerrycan? A. Imitative design B. Dominant design C. Obsolescent design D. Aesthetic design # 2014 MAY # - 9 - ## M14/4/DESTE/SP2/ENG/TZ0/XX 5. Figure 4 and Figure 5 show a Frisbee™ flying disc a plastic disc-shaped glider 20-25 mm in diameter with a lip so it can be gripped easily. The disc is an aerofoil shape in cross-section allowing it to fly by generating lift as it moves through the air while spinning. Flying discs are thrown and caught as a game either for recreation or competition. There are many variations of Frisbee available. The Frisbee was developed by Walter Morrison (US) in 1938, when he was playing a flying game on a beach using a cake pan as a disc. Onlookers offered Morrison money for the cake pan so they could play the game. After more design development work, Morrison sold the rights to his design to the toy company Wham-O who named the disc Frisbee. Further refinements improved the disc so it could be controlled more accurately. **Figure 4: Frisbee™ flying disc** **Figure 5: The Frisbee™ in action** [Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Frisbee_090719.jpg by Wham-O] [Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Frisbee_Catch-_Fcb981.jpg, by Eric Baetscher] (a) (i) State the most important physical property for the choice of material for the Frisbee. (This question continues on the following page) # - 10 - ## M14/4/DESTE/SP2/ENG/TZ0/XX (Question 5 continued) (ii) Outline the influence of market pull and technology push on the design of the Frisbee. (iii) Outline the major anthropometric considerations for the design of the Frisbee. (h)(1) State the manufacturing technique for production of the Frisbee. (I) Explain how the design of the Frisbee reflects radical and incremental thinking. (This question continues on the following page) # - 8 - ## M18/4/DESTE/BP2/ENG/TZ0/XX (Question 2 continued) (b) Outline two advantages of using 3D printing to create the turbine blade shown in Figure 5. 3. Explain how copyright can be used as a strategy for the protection of intellectual property. # - 9 - ## M18/4/DESTE/BP2/ENG/TZO/XX 4. In the 1999 car of the century competition it came fourth (after the Ford Model T, Mini and Citroen DS). Since the production of the first car in 1941 the car has changed very little in appearance, see Figure 10. Initially the bodywork was made of steel, but more recently this has changed to a range of materials such as alloys, composites and plastics. **Figure 10: The VW Beetle 1941-2015** [Source: Andrew Bone https://www.flickr.com/photos/ andreboeni/26393789835/] [Source: PD-USGov] Other materials that make up the VW Beetle have also changed. For example, the windscreen (windshield) is made of laminated glass whereas it was originally made of toughened glass. One way that a product may be considered as a design classic is by the length of the maturity phase in the product life cycle. (a) List two disadvantages of using steel for the body of cars. (This question continues on the following page) # - 19 - ## M18/4/DESTE/BP2/ENG/TZ0/XX (Question 7 continued) (b) Explain why the Volkswagen (VW) Beetle uses laminated glass for its windscreen. (c) Explain two ways that Volkswagen (VW) can extend the maturity phase of the product life cycle. (This question continues on the following page) Turn over
