An old video player Do your parents still have old videos of you doing random things they took when you were younger? Do you remember any silly videos you and your friends recorded when you went on a trip together? Indeed, videos really give us the “throwback vibes.” It brings out all the best and even the worst memories out. There have been many changes in the way we produce multimedia contents over the past years. Videos are one of the contents that have evolved drastically. The way we create and present this content is far different from its original process. From shooting videos on big video cameras and storing it on bulky tapes to doing these in our smartphones is the result of the continuous advancement technology which makes it fun. What type of videos do you have on your personal devices? When do you usually record a video? How do you make an entertaining video? 1 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Objectives In this lesson, you should be able to do the following: Explain the process of video production. Identify the three stages of video production. DepEd Competency Create a reflexive piece or output using an ICT tool, platform, or application of choice on the learning experience undergone during the semester. (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-IIt-23) Explore 15 minutes In this activity, you are going to watch an animated short film of your choice that is available online. The length of the animated short film you are to watch should not be more than five minutes. Pay attention to the message of the video and its creative contents. Afterwards, answer the guide questions on the next page. You may watch this example of an animated video by clicking the link on the next page. What is the message of the short film? 2. What do you think is the importance of producing videos with meaningful themes? How will it help society, especially its target audience? 3. How is the short film presented? What are its creative elements that captured your attention? 3 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production 4. What do you think is the importance of producing visually appealing videos? How will it affect the presentation of the overall content? Explain and Elaborate Video Production Video production is the process of producing video content in a digital format. It usually starts with a story that needs to be told. The content should present it in an understandable and appealing way for it to reach its intended goals. Take note that this is very different from film production. Video production can be done by one or few people with simple equipment whereas in film production, it usually involves a much larger team, equipment, and budget. The Video Production Process Video production is not just pressing the record button on your video camera. It involves a series of phases that is needed to produce a content that is meaningful and visually pleasing to the viewers. The process always starts with three main phases: pre-production, field production, and post-production. 4 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production 1. Pre-production Fig 2. A man planning for production In this phase, the initial plans on how the video will be put together through careful planning and organization. The time frame for this will depend on the intended result. The tasks in the pre-production phase include: Develop the creative treatment The creative treatment describes the concept of the video and its aesthetic elements. This will also include what you want your audience to feel and do after viewing your video. Write the script The script will determine what are the shots you need to capture and what elements you may need in your field production shoot. Tell a story that will surely captivate your intended viewers. 5 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Book the on-screen talent On-screen talents are the ones who will be shown on the finished content. Decide whether you will be this talent or you will be featuring or hiring other people. Scout and secure the locations Go out and scout for locations you have in mind and make sure they will work as you expect it to be. Remember that some locations may be subject to approval so it is important to secure the documents needed. Make a shot list Shot list includes the location of the shoot along with the shots you plan to take or shoot. As much as possible, be specific and organized. Set the budget The budget is one factor that will determine the fate of your production. This will depend on your reason for creating the video in the first place such as for commercial purposes. Choose the music carefully The right music can make your content shine. Therefore, select the music that you think will perfectly fit the shots and the concept or theme of the video. Choose the distribution channels The distribution channel should be given importance because these are the platforms that your video will be used for. This will give you the idea on editing the format of the video. Make a production schedule A production schedule should contain all of the important information about your field production shoot day like the names and contact information of all people involved, the equipment needed, and the shooting timeline. 6 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production 2. Field Production Fig 3. A guy shooting a video This is the phase when the video is shot. This is when the performances, presentations, sounds, and overlays are recorded. The things needed in the field production phase includes: Production Equipment Be sure that you have the correct equipment for the specific job such as the cameras, lighting gear, audio gear, memory cards, extra batteries, stands, tripods, lenses, and more. These will help produce a high quality content. Release Forms Be sure to bring copies of personal footage release forms if you are shooting people off the street and directing them in any way. This will help avoid any legal trouble. 7 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Production Personnel Some complicated scenes of the video may require extra hands like a director, a producer, and other talents. If you have the budget, this will help you a lot. If it is not feasible, there are other ways to achieve the same quality and realistic output maximizing the production team and talent that you have. 3. Post-Production Fig 4. Video editing equipment In this phase, the video created will be edited and put together. This is also where all the other elements are enhanced and added together through editing and mastering. The software and tools needed in the post-production phase include: Video Editing Software Editing is one most important step in the whole production process. There are many options available for video editing software like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier. 8 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Audio Editing Software Audio editing software can take out some of the background noise, hiss, and breath sounds that you may find distracting in the video. Some popular audio editing programs are Adobe Audition and Avid Pro Tools. Extend Activity 1 What are the qualities you usually look for in a video to consider it a “great” video? Give at least three and explain these qualities in the box provided. 9 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Guide Your essay will be graded using this rubric: Criteria Description Score Content The student was able to provide clear 5 pts statements and ideas answering the question. Organization There is logical progression of details and 3 pts clear transitions between ideas. Language Use of correct spelling, mechanics, 2 pts grammar, and word choice are evident. Total Activity 2 Cite one additional task in each phase of video production that was not discussed in the lesson. Write your answers on its corresponding box in the next page. 10 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Pre-production Field production Post-production Guide The phases of the video production process are: Pre-production involves planning for the contents, location, camera shots, script, and other elements of video. Field production involves recording the actual video. Post-production involves editing and enhancing the video. 11 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Evaluate A. On the space provided before each statement, write PRE if the task is done in the pre-production phase, FLD if it is in the field production phase, and PST if it is in the post production phase. __________ 1. Creating the story flow. __________ 2. Locating unwanted elements in the video. __________ 3. Assigning tasks among the team members. __________ 4. Setting up the light and sounds. __________ 5. Recording the voiceovers. B. Answer the question completely in your own words. 1. How would you define video production? 12 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production 2. What do you think is the importance of the video production process? 3. Why do we have to plan and organize what we need in the pre-production phase? 4. How essential is the field production phase in the video production process? 5. Why should we conduct editing in the post-production phase? 13 Unit 20.2: Process of Video Production Wrap Up ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Video production is the process of producing video content in a digital format.
