FBH0033 THINKING SKILLS CHAPTER 2 PERSONAL LEARNING STYLE & GETTING MOTIVATED LEARNING STYLE Learning style theories often attempt to categorize how individuals prefer to receive and process information. Two such theories are based on modality and brain dominance: (i) Modality: How we perceive (receive) information (ii) Brain Dominance: How we process information (1) MODALITY LEARNING STYLE (Our preferred way of perceiving information) (1) MODALITY LEARNING STYLE (Our preferred way of perceiving information) Modality refers to the sensory channels through which individuals receive information. The most common modalities are: (i) V - VISUAL (ii) A - AUDITORY (iii) K - KINESTHETIC Visual learners are those who learn by seeing. They need to see overheads, diagrams, and read text books, etc. to understand a concept. Behavior/Characteristics of Visual Learners: neat and tidy speak quickly good long-range planners & organizers observant of environmental detail appearance-oriented(dress, presentation) good spellers (see words in their minds) noise: not distracted remember what was seen, not heard memorize by visual association trouble remembering verbal instructions (need written form / “repeat, please.”) strong, fast readers need overall view and purpose, cautious until mentally clear about an issue/project doodle on phone, during meeting forget to relay verbal messages to others often answer questions “yes” or “no” rather do a demo than make a speech like art more than music often know what to say but can’t think of right word sometimes tune out when they mean to pay attention Preference: - Drawing - Interior Design & Fashion - Visual Arts - Television, Films - Art Therapy & Symbolism - Painting - Mathematics & Physics Auditory learners must hear what they are learning to really understand it. They enjoy listening, but cannot wait to have a chance to talk themselves. These students respond well to lecture and discussion. Behavior/Characteristics of Auditory Learners: talk to themselves while working noise : distracted move lips and pronounce words as they read enjoy reading aloud & listening can repeat back & mimic tone pitch find writing difficult, are better at telling speak in rhythmic patterns like music more than art learn by listening, remember what was discussed rather than seen are talkative, love discussion, go into lengthy descriptions have problems involving visualization can spell better out loud than in writing like jokes better than comics Preference: - Language - Drama - Music - Training - Lecturing - Talking Approaches to Therapy A kinesthetic learner is an individual who learns best through physical activity, hands-on experiences, and movement. Have a strong preference for engaging their sense of touch and physical sensations to understand and retain information. They tend to learn more effectively when they can actively participate in activities and interact with their environment. Behavior/Characteristics: speak slowly respond to physical rewards stand close when talking to others touch people to get their attention physically oriented, move a lot have early large-muscle development learn by manipulating & doing memorize by walking & seeing use a finger as a pointer when reading can’t sit still for long can’t remember geography unless they’ve actually been there use action words like plot-oriented books – they reflect action with body movement as they read may have messy handwriting want to act things out like involved games Preference: - Sport - Carpentry - Gymnastics - Athletics - Body Work Therapies Study a well-organized and colorful diagram that illustrates the stages of photosynthesis, with labels and arrows indicating the flow of energy and materials. Conduct a hands-on Attend a lecture or experiment where they participate in a discussion plant seeds, provide led by an engaging varying amounts of instructor who verbally sunlight and water, and explains the photosynthesis observe how the plants process, its significance, and respond over time, related concepts. linking their observations to the concept of photosynthesis. Researchers, including Reiff, Eisler, Barbe, and Stronck have concluded that in a classroom, the students would be approximately: 25-30% visual 25-30% auditory 15% tactile/kinesthetic 25-30% mixed modalities (2) BRAIN DOMINANCE (How we process information) Brain dominance theories suggest that individuals have a dominant hemisphere of the brain that affects their learning preferences. Left-Brained Learners: Left-brained individuals are said to be more logical, analytical, and detail-oriented. They may prefer structured approaches, lists, and systematic learning methods. Right-Brained Learners: Right-brained individuals are thought to be more creative, intuitive, and holistic in their thinking. They might prefer visual aids, metaphors, and imaginative approaches to learning. CLASS ACTIVITY 1 Identify the modality learning style of every member in your group. CLASS ACTIVITY 2 1. Choose your team (2 persons in a team) who are having the same preferred modality. 2. Choose one type of SOCIAL PROBLEM/ISSUE 3. Provide: Definition, Reason, Effect and How to Control 4. Afterward, present your findings to the class For example, the kinesthetic pair can create a hands-on activity, the auditory pair can prepare a short presentation, and the visual pair can design a visual aid (poster, infographic, or diagram).
