THORACIC VERTEBRAE T2-T8 ( TYPICAL) T1 ( A-TYPICAL) 9-12 ( A-TYPICAL) THORACIC VERTEBRA LATERAL VIEW-THORACIC Typical Thoracic Peculiar features ( typical vertebrae) - Larger than cervical vertebrae - Body: heart shaped. On either side of body are facets for articulation with the heads of ribs. Four facets found on each vertebra- 2 superior and 2 inferior. - Vertebral arch: Formed by the laminae and pedicles. Both laminae and pedicles are short, so vertebral arch is small. Pedicles are directed backwards. - Vertebral foramen- rounded/oval in shape, fairly small. - Transverse processes: These are bilateral, thick, strong and prominent. Anteriorly, there is a facet which articulates with the tubercle of the rib ( ribs 1-10) - Spinous process: long, slender, found in midline, directed downward, except for #’s 9.10,11 & 12 Special features of T1, 9,10, 11 & 12 T1 :Spinous process is very long and thick. Body: has facets and demi facets for articulation with 1st and 2nd ribs. T9: Inferior demifacets for ribs are sometimes not present. T10: Body bears costal facets for articulation with 10th. Rib. No inferior facets- Facet for articulation with 10th rib may be absent. T11: Body has superior facets oval in shape for articulation with 11th rib. No inferior facets, Transverse processes small-no costal facets. T12: Body has superior facets, oval in shape for articulation with 12th rib, no inferior facets, transverse processes are small-no costal facets LUMBAR VERTEBRA LATERAL VIEW-LUMBAR Typical lumbar LUMBAR VERTEBRAE Peculiar Features - larger than cervical and thoracic vertebrae. - Body : large, wide and kidney shaped. - Vertebral arch: Laminae are short and thick, and directed /inclined downward. Pedicles are short and thick. - Vertebral canal: triangular in shape, smaller than cervical spine, but larger than thoracic spine. - Spinous process: rectangular in shape, thick and strong on margins, found in midline, project backwards. - Transverse processes: bilateral, long and thin - Articular processes : Superior processes have a rough elevation on posterior aspect, projecting backward, called mamillary processes. The pars interarticularis is a short portion of bone which is found between the superior and inferior articulatory processes. - Articulatory facets: There are 2… superior and inferior.Inferior ones are vertical and face laterally and anteriorly. Superior facets are also vertical, and face medially and posteriorly Fifth Lumbar vertebra is the largest of all. Transverse processes are extremely large and are attached to all of the pedicle and some part of the body
