**Geography Test review.** 1. **Three renewable and three non-renewable resources. Why would each be considered renewable or non-renewable?** **Renewable: Water, Solar, Wind.** Water energy is renewable because the earth will always have water and there is no risk of water disappearing. Similarly with both solar and wind energy there is no risk of the sun or wind disappearing. **Non-renewable:** Fossil fuels, coal, nuclear. Nuclear is nonrenewable because it is mined from a mineral that is only found in select locations and has a risk of running out. Coal and fossil fuels are also non renewables because they take a long time to form for example coal takes millions of years to form, and it can\'t be renewed faster than the demand. 2. **Using 3 categories, explain the difference between in-shore and off-shore fishing.** **Offshore** **In-shore** 90% of the catch Smaller boats Big company owned Seasonal Bigger crew One person owned/partnership 3. **What are the main types of mining? Name and explain them.** **Open Pit mining, Strip mining, Underground mining**. 4. **Some areas in Canada have a more or less successful farming industry that others. Why might some areas have better farming agriculture?** Some areas have a lot better climate than others, for example not as dry or wet as thriving farming areas. Another factor is because in some areas they may not be able to find employees to work on farms to sustain it. 5. **Provide an example for primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary industries.** **Primary:** Raw materials **Secondary:** manufacturing **Tertiary:** services **Quaternary:** Knowledge 6. **What are the three main fishing areas in Canada? For each Comment on the common species caught.** Fish processing, fish farming and commercial fishing. Fish farming: Salmon Commercial fishing: Cod 7. **Why did the east coast fishing industry collapse?** There was a lot of overfishing and uncontrolled foreign fishing. International ships were overfishing along with canadian ships were overfishing. Couldnt re populate in time. 8. Precipitation, trasportation, filtration, run off, storage, evaporation, condonsation 9. **What are the five categories of the ecological footprint? What measurement is the EF based on. What is Canadas average and explain why.** The five categories are food, shelter, mobility, goods and services. The ef is based on global hectares. Canadas ecological footprint is 7.5h. It is so high because we need a great deal of electricity and energy as well as being accustomed to such a high quality of life. 10. **How might you reduce your ecological footprint?** **Food:** Never waste food and use it to all its potential **Shelter**: Don\'t buy an extravagant house that needs extreme levels of energy, and you don\'t need it **Goods:** Only buy what you need and don\'t throw waste on the floor recycle it properly **Mobility:** Not using a car or some form of transportation that will not emit pollution. **Services:** Don\'t hire or deal with something in an expensive/harmful way when not necessary 11. **How can you make use of carnivorous and deciduous lumber?** **Carnivorous:** Production of paper can be used as fuel or energy can also be made into pulp which produces newspaper and paper. **Deciduous:** Used for houses, furniture, floors and other hardwood needs. 12. **What is the difference between intensive and extensive farming?** Intensive: Uses a lot of labor and resources. They focus on investing a lot into recourses and labor smaller farms Extensive: they focus on more land but not as good quality recourses and labor 13. **In Canada, wear would most fuel minerals be located? (physiographic region)** A lot of coal has been found in the interior planes of western Canada. There have also been some found in western Cordilia and appellations. Alberta\\sascatchewan has a lot of oil. 14. **What is the difference between matalic and non-metallic minerals.**
