SPLP 5320 Research Principles for Evidence Based Practice in SLP Fall Semester Part 2 Dr. Victorino Part 1 covered foundations and research methods; Systematicity in research, reading research articles, etc. Project and midterm exam administered and graded by Dr. Centeno. Makes up 50% of final grade. Part 2 revisits many of the concepts above, but focuses on application of these research principles to help you to conduct evidence-based practice as a clinician. Checking Review Syllabus & Calendar : in Project B (in parts – review timing & grading) Final exam (*partially cumulative* in that you will be expected to be familiar with foundational concepts and research methodologies) Assignments/exam administered and graded by Dr. Victorino. Part 2 grades make up 50% and will be averaged with Part 1 grade to become your final grade for the course. Two truths and no lies How do Each patient is unique; AND Each patient represents a particular population SLPs There is likely some evidence available to engage in guide practice for most populations EBP? What is the PICO Framework? P= I= C= O= 1. Diagnostic Is one tool better (or even similar) to another for a specific dx? Types of Example: Does analyzing a language sample yield diagnostic information similar to (or better than) a questions 2. Intervention standardized test? Does one treatment approach lead to better (or similar) that can be outcomes for patients with a specific dx? Example: Does using Story Champs lead to greater addressed narrative gains than business-as-usual treatment? 3. Cost-effectiveness Is one treatment less expensive to consume/provide than another treatment (assuming both are effective)? Example: Does one in-person session per week result in similar outcomes to two or more in-person sessions per week? Gillam & Gillam’s (2006) EBP Framework https://doi.org/10.1044/0161-1461(2006/035) Step 1: P = Patient PICO Demographics Medical hx Diagnosis (or diagnoses) Patient preferences Narrow your search Search Google for Autism Treatment Describe results Search Google Scholar for Autism Treatments Results = #? describe Search for Autism Treatments Children Language Since 2023….. Results = Present a current client! Pretend this is Grand Rounds and talk a partner through your client, then present to the class. Client Age Dx Releva Tx initials nt info goals Conduct a search for your patient 1. based on dx….. 2. How many results did you get when using just the Dx + 3. “treatment” in Google Scholar?? Add Dx + ”treatment” + skill or aspect of speech/language. How many results? I = Intervention PICO What treatment is standard? What treatment are you considering? Whether a new treatment works in the real world (effectiveness) Whether one treatment works faster than another (cost-effectiveness) C = Comparison Match up the two approaches This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY 0 = Outcomes For the measures you are interested in, which treatment was “better”? Are you interested in test score gains? Parent-reported gains? Self-reported gains? What particular skill or area?? Parameter Descriptor Population Children with ASD/Autistic children Intervention ABA/strict behavioral treatment Sample Comparison Joint attention intervention PICO Grid (JASPER) Outcome ??? What are our options here? What might we measure? Why? How? Sample PICO questions (Gillam & Gillam, 2006) Step 2: Finding External Evidence 1.
