BOCA RATON POLICE SERVICES DEPARTMENT Standard Operating Procedure 41.20 SPARE VEHICLES AND CRIME DETERRENT VEHICLES Revised: July 18, 2022 I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to establish guidelines for tracking and assignment of spare vehicles and crime deterrent vehicles (CDVs) to employees through the CAD system. II. PROCEDURE: A. SPARE VEHICLES: 1. All spare vehicles are to be tracked via MCT using the ‘Zulu’ designation but will be assigned as ‘Spare Vehicles’ under the nature code on the Status (F5) screen. 2. Employees preparing to use a spare vehicle shall have public safety dispatchers (PSDs) update the location of the spare vehicle with the Department ID number of the driver. When finished with the spare, the employee shall notify Communications to update the location in CAD to the vehicle’s current location (e.g., PD or Complex). a. Example: If ID# 111 takes pool car #407 from the police station while his/her assigned vehicle is down. The employee will contact a PSD and request a change of location for Z407 from PD to ‘ID 111’. When the employee returns the spare to the police station, he/she will contact a PSD and request the location of Z407 be changed to PD. b. The nature code ‘Spare Vehicle’ will remain constant, only the location will be changing. 3. Employees who down a spare vehicle at the Municipal Services complex shall notify the supervisor assigned to the spare vehicle and its return to the police station will be arranged once it is on the ready line. B. CRIME DETERRENT VEHICLES(CDV): 1. All CDVs are to be tracked via MCT using the ‘Zulu’ designation but will be assigned as ‘Crime Deterrent Vehicles’ under the nature code on the Status (F5) screen. 2. It is the responsibility of the LEO who places a CDV in the field to ensure that the vehicle is routinely inspected for damage and function. a. Effective: June 24, 2013 Revised: July 18, 2022 CAD notes shall be added to the call each time the vehicle is checked. Spare Vehicles and Crime Deterrent Vehicles SOP No. 41.20 Page 1 of 2 b. The LEO who checked out the CDV shall return the vehicle to the police station once the need for it has subsided or the Municipal Services complex if it needs maintenance. 3. Any time a CDV vehicle is to be utilized, LEOs shall: a. Notify PSDs to close out the vehicle’s current CDV call (location should be at PD). b. Notify PSDs to generate a new CDV call with the address where the vehicle will be left. 4. Once a CDV is returned to the police station or the Municipal Services complex from the field, LEOs shall notify Communications employees to change the location of the CDV to the PD (do not close out current call). 5. Employees who down a CDV at the Municipal Services complex shall notify the supervisor assigned to the spare vehicle and its return to the police station will be arranged once it is on the ready line.
