SOCIAL SCIENCE 3 The Industrial Revolution as a World Event MODULE 1 LESSON 1 At the end of this module, you will be able to: discuss why the Industrial Revolution began in Britain; compare and contrast the conditions in Britain before and during the Industrial Revolution; and explain the roles played by the factors of production in industrialization. According to the International Potato Center, potatoes rank third behind rice and wheat as the world’s most important food crop. Potato chips are one of the many products that can be made out of this humble root crop, and are considered one of the most popular snacks the world over. As early as the middle of the 1700s, significant changes have been happening in Britain. This was the Industrial Revolution, the shift from making goods by hand to producing them with the use of machines. The Industrial Revolution began in Britain due to some conditions that existed there during that time. This is elaborated in the letter of George Taylor to his mother Margaret. George works in a cotton mill in Manchester, and was writing to his mother about his stay in the city. Dear Mother, I wish to inform you that as this letter reaches you, you have nothing to worry about me. My state of health is fine, and the long hours of work and working conditions are still bearable. My workplace is just one of the many cotton mills around here in Manchester. I consider myself fortunate to have been employed here, because the wage that I receive is a great help to our family. With my stay here, I have learned that conditions were favorable for this city, and in other cities, as well, to industrialize. I have observed that there are a lot of people who have moved in here to work in the mills. I have talked to some of them at work and they said they used to work in farms, but because of the change in agricultural setup, they decided to come here and work in the factories instead. I was also thinking, this industrialization would not have become possible if there are no available raw materials. In the cotton mill where I work, there is a steady demand of cotton, which I heard, came from the country’s colonies. Wool gathered from the sheep raised here was also a raw material in textile production. Resources of iron ore provided the materials in making machines that we use here, while water and coal were used to fuel these machines. I was also wondering where do the funds come from to put up all these factories, and I have learned that there were wealthy merchants who invested in these endeavors. They built factories and introduced ways of more efficient means of production. And you know what, Mother? I have also realized that the presence of an extensive canal system was advantageous in the transport of raw materials and the manufactured goods as well. Water transportation is very accessible and efficient here. And of course, the factories and mills here are stable because the British government passed laws that are favorable for these businesses. These laws even help them expand. The increasing number of factories here is one indication that the city is fast industrializing. Things have really changed a lot here. The machines are a great help in production. If we were to do these manually, it would take us a lot of time to complete PSHS Social Science 3: World History 2 | Page 2 of 6 © 2020 Philippine Science High School System. All rights reserved. Production has been made faster and more efficient. I think my letter is getting too long, Mother. I wish you all well there. As I have said, nothing to worry about me here. I am taking extra caution at work so I won’t get into any accident. Bye for now, Mother. Until next mail. The Industrial Revolution was a period when rural communities in Britain were transformed into urban societies. The means of production drastically changed: the manually created goods became mass produced through the use of machines. This revolution in industry began in Britain. The advancement was spurred by the abundant labor supply, the natural resources that serve as raw materials in production, the presence of individuals who managed these businesses, and the legislations passed by the government that were favorable for the industries and businesses.
