RIVERSIDE FIRE AUTHORITY FIELD OPERATING GUIDELINES SECONDARY SEARCH ASSIGNMENT The secondary search is used after the fire is under control and hazardous conditions have been minimized. While it should not be the crew that performed the primary search or the RIC team it should be done soon after. It should be as through and systematic as the primary search while keeping in contact with the I.C. to inform on unsafe hazards and rekindle spots in the fire. RESPONSIBILITIES  Ensure that appropriate tools are carried throughout the scenario based on:  Hazards Present  Construction Type and Features  Potential Escape Routes  Fire and Smoke Conditions  Notifies command that the “secondary search team” is entering the building and what direction the search is going to made in  Conducts a thorough systematic secondary search (remember that a secondary search must slower and more thorough).  Thorough search of all rooms, areas and debris.  Periodically call out for victims  Work from fire area to exterior  Identify rooms that have been searched.  Maintains teams’ integrity with visual, voice, or direct contact as well as situational awareness.  Clear all rooms visually or by touch  Stop periodically to listen for victims and fire sounds  All tasks should be completed with a sense of thoroughness as to locate any victims. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Extend the perimeter of the secondary search to the exterior of the building checking surrounding vegetation, shrubs and trees for victims rendered unconscious from trying to escape the building.
