STAGE 6 Unit focus: Scaly Beasts Text focus: Information Text Scaly Facts Fastest lizard Not only are they one of the most popular rep les kept as pets, but bearded dragons are also the fastest lizards on Earth. They naturally occur in most of Southern Australia and are also adept climbers. The fasted recorded speed for a bearded dragon is 40 km/h, closely followed by the green iguana at 35 km/h. With an average length of between 7 and 10 feet, the black mamba is one of the longest venomous snakes in the world. Reaching speeds of 23 km/h, you wouldn’t have much chance of outrunning one. Perhaps the best advice to anybody near an angry black mamba is to be somewhere else. Fastest turtle Even though they usually swim about at speeds of around 8 km/h, the leatherback turtle can reach speeds of up to 35 km/h in the water. That makes them easily the fastest turtle in the world and very nearly the fastest rep le. Smallest reptile Only discovered in 2021, the Brookesia nana (or nano-chameleon) is just under 22mm long from its nose to the end of its tail. That’s equivalent to a sunflower seed. Two of the species were discovered in Madagascar. all resources ©2021 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com Long Tongues Perhaps more notorious for changing colour, chameleons also have the longest tongues of all the rep les.
