CHRISTIAN LIVING 12 QUARTER 2 LESSON 2: SACRAMENTS OF SERVICE COMMUNION “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men” - Mk 1:17 SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS Why is that Catholic priest do not marry? - Celibacy. is the state of voluntarily being unmarried, sexually abstinent, or both, usually for religious reasons. It is often in association with the role of a religious official or devotee. - Though Celibacy is not a divine law, the Catholic Church imposes it to her priests with a view to the dignity and duties of the priesthood. Because of Celibacy, the priest will be single – minded and wholehearted in his commitment to Jesus, High Priest Christians participate in the priesthood of Christ in two ways: 1. The common priesthood of the faithful, conferred through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. 2. The Ministerial priesthood of the ordained ministers which is conferred for the service of the common priesthood of the faithful. WHAT IS SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS? - It can be defined as the sacrament by which bishops, priests, and deacons of the Church are ordained and receive the powers and grace to perform their duties. These powers refer to the following: 1. Eucharist. 2. Forgiveness of Sins. 3. Preaching of the faith, administration of the sacraments, and government in matters of faith and the sacraments. DIFFERENT DEGREES OF ORDERS IN THE CHURCH 1. Bishops (episcopate). The fullness of priestly power is found in the episcopate. 2. Priest (presbyterate). The priest is true priest united to the bishops in the priestly dignity and depend on the bishops for their pastoral task. 3. Deacons (diaconate). The deacons are ministers for the service of the Church. They can administer Baptism, officiate the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, solemnize marriage, and do blessings at funerals. MATTER AND FORMS The matter of the sacrament of Holy Orders is the laying of hands by the ordaining bishop. The form consists of the words of the ritual accompanying the laying of the hands by the bishops. WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF HOLY ORDERS? The effects of Holy Orders are grace and characters. 1. The Characters. The character is the special configuration with Christ, the head of the Mystical Body. This character is an indelible mark which makes the priest “a priest forever” 2. Grace. Holy orders, just like the other sacraments, increases sanctifying grace. It brings sacramental grace which consist of the help needed to perform the functions of the degree of orders received. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Matrimony. It comes from the latin words matris and munus which mean the “duty of motherhood” - This etymological meaning indicates God’s purpose of marriage. MARRIAGE. Is a visible sign of Christ’s covenant with the Church. In it the partners are required to be faithful to each other, which reflects God’s fidelity with mankind and Christ’s fidelity to His Church. The external sign which constitutes the Sacrament of Matrimony is simply the valid contract made by man and woman to live together as husband and wife. - If there is no valid contract, there is no sacrament. From this we can affirm the following (Matter and Form) 1. The remote matter of the contract refers to the persons who get married or the right over their bodies for procreation. 2. The proximate matter is the sign or words by which the giving of the body or the marital rite is manifested. 3. The form is the mutual acceptance of this sacrament manifested externally. MINISTERS - In marriage, the actual sign is made up by the contracting parting themselves. Therefore, they are the ministers of the sacrament. The priest who envokes God’s blessing during the ceremony is just the Church’s witness to the contract entered into by the partners.
