Summary
This document provides an overview of interactive multimedia - exploring its definitions, types, and various application areas, including education, training, entertainment, research, and business. The different aspects of multimedia elements (text, graphics, audio, video, and animation) with their types and file formats are included. Several types of hardware (scanners, video cameras, and audio devices) and software are described. The summary details methods of delivery for multimedia (like web and CD-based mediums), interactive television, and the significance of interactive multimedia in various sectors.

multimedia - is the presentation of information by using a combination of text, audio, graphic, video and animation In ICT, multimedia means more than the use of the various media. computer user - interacts with the computer to perform tasks such as finding information or play games to develop a skill. multimedia - used as a common source of reference - used in education and training. - used in entertainment industry. - widely used in mathematics & scientific research. - business - government Multimedia applications - helps those with low vision in performing tasks normally in their daily lives. - educational and rehabilitation program to improve their lives. Interactivity - refers to the way users interact with a multimedia application or program. Types of Multimedia Interactivity 1. Linear - user interacts with the multimedia application without controlling the progress of the content. - user is a passive receiver of the multimedia content most of the time. Types of Multimedia Interactivity 2. Non-linear - allows the user to interact with the content according to what the user wants from the content - user can control the progress and sequence of the multimedia content by using buttons or links - two-way communication Virtual Reality - best example of multimedia technology which uses non-linear interactivity. Advanced virtual reality systems - allow users to respond and interact in many ways to its virtual surroundings. Types: 1. Web-based Medium - combination of multimedia technology and Internet technology 2. CD-based Medium - used to store and deliver multimedia content. - costly as it takes a long time to produce a complete multimedia program Interactive television -use of digital television to deliver high definition multimedia content to the user. - example is Apple TV (a widescreen TV, a Mac or a PC, an Internet connection, a High- Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable and the software, iTunes 7). FIVE MAIN ELEMENTS OF MULTIMEDIA 1. Texts static 2. Graphics 3. Audio 4. Video dynamic 5. Animations TEXT Text - basic element of multimedia - involves the use of text types, sizes, colours and background colour. Hypertext - text used as linked to other media or screen. TEXT Three things that need to be considered to produce an effective multimedia program The position of the text on the screen. Length of the message. Legibility of the text. GRAPHICS Graphics - make the multimedia application attractive. - help to illustrate ideas through still pictures. Types of Graphics 1. Bitmaps (paint graphics) 2. Vector (draw graphics) GRAPHICS Bitmaps images - real images that can be captured from devices such as cameras or scanners. Vector graphics - drawn on the computer and only require a small amount of memory. AUDIO Audio - use of speech, music and sound effects. - also called sound element. Basic Types of Audio 1. Analog Audio 2. Digital Audio AUDIO Analog audio - refers to the original sound signal. Digital audio - refers to the digital sampling of the actual sound - sound used in multimedia VIDEO Reasons why Digital Videos Are Popular 1. video clips can be edited easily 2. the digital video files can be stored like any other files in the computer 3. the video files can be transferred within a computer network 4. it allows non-linear editing in any part of the video ANIMATION Animation - process of making a static image look like it is moving Two Categories of Animation 1. 2D (2 Dimension) 2. 3D (3 Dimension) animations ANIMATION 2D animation - refers to creating movements in basic objects. - objects are put into various situations or positions and have movement on the screen. 3D animation - refers to creating movements to three dimensional digital objects from photographs. MOBILE MULTIMEDIA IN TELECOMMUNICATION Multimedia - has become a part of the telecommunications industry Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) - features incorporated into most mobile phones - displaying of texts, graphics, video and play audio on mobile phones. DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE 1. Scanners - used to convert conventional images, texts, drawings and photos into digital form that can be understood by the computer. Types of Scanners 1. flatbed scanner 2. hand held scanner 3. sheetfed scanner 4. 3D scanner 1. flatbed scanner 2. hand held scanner DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE 2. Video Cameras - captures videos Types of Video Cameras 1. Analog video camera 2. Digital video camera DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE Analog video camera - records video in analog signals on a magnetic video tape Digital video camera - records video in digital signals, which can be stored in various forms of media, such as digital video tape or memory cards - data stored in these DV tapes can directly be read by a computer system DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE ordinary camera - images are captured on a roll of film digital camera - images are captured and stored in a media card. - its advantages are images captured can directly be used in the computer, saves cost and can choose to keep or delete the pictures in the memory card. DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE 3. Audio devices - needed to record analog sound. The sounds are then changed into digital sound. Examples of devices used for recording sounds or audio are microphone, sound card and voice synthesizer EDITING SOFTWARE FOR MULTIMEDIA Multimedia production - the data in the video camera can be edited, changed, transferred and stored in the computer text editor - used to edit plain text graphic editor - can edit images, draw or illustrate pictures or objects EDITING SOFTWARE FOR MULTIMEDIA animation editors - used for producing 2D, 3D, special effects and animation for the Web audio editor - used for voice recording or producing music and special sound effects. video editor - used to edit video
