Preserving food Food preservation is the process used to slow down or kill bacteria that causes food to go bad most food contains bacteria making it sterile cold temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer slow down bacterial growth allowing food to be stored several months Drying and salting south Africans Biltong is a popular meat preserved through drying which removes moisture from the food and can be done in sunlight ovens or heated rooms salt when used to preserve food draws moisture preventing bacteria from surviving to prevent overt saltiness salted food is soaked in fresh water for two hours before consumption pickling Pickling dating back 4000 years in India was used to preserve out of seasoned veggies today it it's a way we enjoy the flavors of pickled food typically in brine which kills bacteria popular pickled foods include achar chutney and Pickles. Types of plastics and their uses Synthetic materials Synthetic materials like plastics are primarily made from mineral oils with natural materials being more expensive and heavier companies can mold these materials into unique shapes. Example of natural polymers include Wood rubber starch leather cotton and wool Polyester Polyethylene (pet) is this synthetic polyester derived from petroleum air and water commonly used in clothing and water and cold drink bottles. High density polyethylene (hdpe) High density poly Ethylene petroleum based thermoplastic polymer is utilized in various products such as pipes cutting boards cleaning products and shoe parts Polyvinyl chloride (pvc) PVC also known as vinyl is a strong thermoplastic polymer commonly utilized the pipes medical equipment wire and cables Low density polyethylene (ldpe) Low density polyethylene a thermoplastic derived from petroleum, is renewed for its flexibility and durability making it suitable for producing milk bottles and food containers. Polypropylene (pp Polypropylene is a strong stiff and crystalline thermoplastic used in various industries such as plastic containers machinery components fibers and textiles Polystyrene (ps) Polystyrene is a commercially produced polymer derived from petroleum derived styrene, used in food packaging and laboratory ware. Thermosetting and thermoplastic Thermosetting plastic, which is liquid like or flexible until heated or combined with chemicals becomes rigid and hard. It cannot be reheated, making it unsuitable for new products like epoxy resin glue, pot handles, car tyers, shoe soles and electrical plugs.
