What is Text? As defined by Merriam Webster, a text is the original words and form of a written or printed work. It is generally considered as a written material especially longer pieces of writing as in a book, a letter, or a newspaper. It is made up of sentences and ideas that convey a point or one central idea. Text-is anything that conveys a set of meanings to the person who examines it. It is a formal and orderly and usually extended expression of thought on a subject and is generally regarded as spoken. Discourse refers to how a language conveys meanings, propel actions, and provoke a specific response. TEXT VS. DISCOURSE TEXT -is made up of sentences. DISCOURSE -is the use of such sentences. TEXT VS. DISCOURSE TEXT A text is made up of sentences having the property of grammatical cohesion. A discourse is made up of utterances having the property of coherence. TEXT VS. DISCOURSE TEXT is defined in terms of its being a physical product. Meaning is not found in the text. DISCOURSE is viewed as a process. Meaning is derived through the reader’s interaction with the text --> discourse.
