**L1 - FOLK DANCES IN THE PHILIPPINES** **PHILLIPINE FOLK DANCE** - Philippine folk dancing is a true reflection of daily life in past centuries while enchanting modern audiences at the same time. - They are a celebration of daily life, health, peace, war, harvest times and other aspects of life. - Immigrants and conquerors have been a great influence in the different Philippine folk dances, but Filipino culture and values was never erased from those influences. - Philippine folk dance is a distinct representation of the daily lives of the traditional Filipino. It connects the Filipino then and the Filipino now through its joyful music, graceful moves and amazing coordination from one another. **Nature of Folk Dances** OCCUPATIONAL DANCES - depict actions of a particular occupation. (e.g. Planting, Punding) RELIGIOUS/CEREMONIAL - associated with religion, vows and ceremonies. (e.g. Dugsu, Sua-sua) COMIC DANCES - depict funny movements for entertainment. (e.g. Kinotan, Makonggo) GAME DANCES - done with play elements. (e.g. Lubi-lubi, Pavo) WEDDING DANCES - performed during wedding feasts. (e.g. Panasahan) COURTSHIP DANCES - depict the art of courtship. (e.g. Hele-hele, Tadek, Pantomina) FESTIVAL DANCES - suitable for special occasions. (e.g. Pandanggo, Habanera) WAR DANCES - show imagery combat. (e.g. Sagayan, Palu-palo) 1\. **THE ITIK-ITIK** ***-  Itik**--**itik*** is a mimetic folk dance in The Philippines. It originated in the province of Surigao in Mindanao. The dance's movements imitate the movement of the tikling bird as it walks around through tall grass and between tree branches. People perform the dance using bamboo poles. The dance is composed of three basic steps which include singles, doubles and hops. Dancers need good balance as they go through a series of movements that include some impressive acrobatics. Dancers carefully balance three half-filled glasses of rice wine on their heads and hands as they gracefully spin and roll on the ground. It's a lively dance that originated on Lubang Island. The dance is broken into four parts: two devoted to the battle and two devoted to reconciling. The men of the dance wear coconut shells as part of their costumes, and they slap them in rhythm with the music. Modern dance expands on traditional ballet technique, freeing it to encompass the exciting world of total body involvement and creative expression. Characteristics of a Modern Dance 1\. FREE-FORM AND IMPROVISATIONAL \- Modern dance is often described as fluid and freeform, alternating between long, languid movements, and jerky ones that show the contraction and expansion of the body. Some dancers create their own unique moves for routines or even use improvisation during their performances. 2\. IT'S EMOTIONAL -Modern dance expresses the emotion that the music evokes in the dances. Dancers essentially perform their feelings to music, conveying a raw or impassioned display. 3\. IT REJECTS CONVENTION \- Rather than striving for the weightlessness and grace of ballet, modern dancers use their body weight to propel themselves across the floor, often falling, tumbling, or rolling to express rhythm. **BALLROOM DANCE** \- It is performed by two individuals (partnership), performed with specific dance patterns and usually dressed in formal costume. \- Nowadays, ballroom dance is not that common to perform in an audience. \- It is usually done through contests (dance sport) or occasional social gatherings. \- The ballroom dances are cha-cha, foxtrot, tango, quickstep, waltz, samba and rumba. 1\. **CHA-CHA** \- Cha-cha-cha is danced to authentic Cuban music, although in ballroom competitions it is often danced to Latin pop or Latin rock. It is danced to slow, sensual music with a Latin beat and features a hip action known as "Cuban Motion." **L4 -- CHEER DANCE AND HIP-HOP** **Cheer Dance** \- Cheer dance is a dance activity cheer for a team, entertain the crowd and brings optimistic spirit. Its dance movements consist of acrobatic and gymnastic skills. The main parts of cheerleading include jumps, stunting, and tumbling. **- Jumps** consist of a toe touch, pike, and a front hurdler. These jumps can go anyway your choreographer wants them to go, and you can rotate in them. **- Stunting** is when you lift your flyer up, and they can do dance movements up in the air. There are many kinds of stunts, where they could actually stay in your hands, or they can be thrown into the air. **- Tumbling** is about a quarter of the routine. It requires a lot of leg power and upper body strength. **TOE TOUCH** = is a cheerleading jump where a cheerleader\'s legs are straddled and raised as high as possible, with their toes pointed and knees pointed back. **STUNTING** ![](media/image33.jpeg)- Stunting in cheerleading is a gymnastic-style move that involves a base, a flyer, and a spotter. \- It is considered one of the most serious parts of the sport. **TUMBLING** \- Tumbling is a gymnastics technique that involves flipping, twisting, rolling, and jumping. Cheerleaders use tumbling moves in their routines. \- three basic tumbling moves: the handstand, cartwheel and back bend. \- These three moves are fundamental to tumbling. **HIP-HOP** \- This is a street dance style that is primarily performed to hype music. Its movements are free-style, emotional feels, hip and influenced by culture. Rap is the popular music performed on hip-hop.
