OUR CULTURAL DIVERSITY Peru is a very special place with many different cultures. There are three main regions: the Andes, the coast, and the jungle. Each region has its own traditions, foods, music, dances, and clothes. This makes Peru a colorful and interesting country. The Andes: In the Andes, people have festivals like Inti Raymi, which celebrates the sun god, and the Fiesta de la Candelaria, which has lots of Andean music and dance. They eat special foods like pachamanca, where meat is cooked with hot stones, and cuy (guinea pig). They use musical instruments like the quena (flute), and their dances, like huayno, are very lively. People wear colorful clothes with beautiful patterns and embroidery, especially during festivals. The Coast: On the coast, people celebrate festivals like the Marinera Festival, which is full of energetic dances and music. Famous foods from the coast include ceviche, a dish of raw fish with lemon, and lomo saltado, a stir-fried beef dish. The music has lively rhythms like marinera and Afro-Peruvian beats. Coastal clothing is often modern and stylish, reflecting global fashion. The Jungle: In the jungle, people have ceremonies like the Yagé ritual, using traditional plants for spiritual healing. They eat dishes like tacacho (fried bananas) and juanes (rice wrapped in leaves). Their music includes instruments like the marimba and bombo, and their dances are vibrant and fun. Clothing in the jungle is bright and colorful, often handmade with fabrics and beads. Peru’s mix of cultures from the Andes, the coast, and the jungle makes it a very diverse and vibrant country. It is important to respect and celebrate all these different cultures to understand what makes Peru unique.
