What is folk dance? 2. Why is it important to learn Philippine folk dances? Lesson: Philippine Folk Dance An Introduction to the Culture and Tradition of the Philippines through Dances. History of Binatbatan Binatbatan is an occupational dance from Paoay, Ilocos Norte. It depicts the beating of the cotton pods to separate the seeds from the fibers with the use of two sticks called “batbat” in the Ilocos region. History of Binatbatan The people of Paoay are known for their skill in weaving the famous Ilocano cloth called abel. Oftentimes, the weavers engage themselves in a contest as to who could finish first and could produce and clean more fibers. Cotton pod Abel cloth History of Binatbatan When the weavers wish to have fun and merrymaking, they sing and dance and use the batbat (sticks) in the dance. The speed of beating and the rhythmic sounds produced by the sticks make the dance very lively, colorful, and exciting. History of Binatbatan Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, also called Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts, is a cultural and religious festival in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines every first week of May. Costume Dancers wear the traditional Ilocano costume. Equipment Two pieces of sticks 18 inches long are held at each hand. Music Music is composed in two parts: A and B. One, Two, Three, to measure in 3/4 time. One, two; or one, two and; or one, and two, and to measure in 2/4 time. Binatbatan Dance Figure 1 1. Sit with your legs folded under you on your knees. If sticks are not available, use unsharpened pencils. Hold the sticks out in front of you. Hit both sticks together on the floor to the right side (Count 1), to the center (Count 2), to the left side (Count 3). On Count 4, bring sticks back to the right side. Repeat 6 more times very quickly and hold on the 8th time with sticks striking the middle and body leaning back away from them. Then, uncross your hands and hit the sticks on both sides (Count 2). Girls: Hit the sticks in front (follow step 1) (Count 3). Repeat 6 more times very quickly and hold on the 8th time with sticks striking the middle and body leaning back away from them. Standing up, beat the sticks together up high 4 times quickly, alternating the sides of the sticks that you are beating. Repeat with sticks down low. Feet alternate quickly, step on the flat right foot, up on the ball of the left foot, back onto the flat right foot (Count 1,2,3). Repeat 7 more times. Females curtsey on introduction and males bow. Turn to face each other and sit on your knees. Complete Figure 1 step 4 times total. Complete Figure 2 step 4 times total. Complete figure 3 step. Continue Figure 3 step but with the male following the female in a circle for a count of 8 then switch and have the female follow the male in a circle for a count of 8. Finish facing the front.
