Materials and Techniques used in Creating Arts IN A PIECE OF PAPER, DRAW ANYTHING THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND LEARNING OBJECTIVES Show understanding of the materials and Discriminate among techniques in creating various materials and arts: techniques: Critique available materials and appropriate techniques DEFINE: Medium is the material or means which the artist uses to objectify his feeling or thought. Technique is the procedure or skill required for a specific task. Production is the making of something. Traditionally, the following discussions pertain to the artwork materials and techniques and productions to remind us how our Filipino artists, here and abroad, started the legacy of our forefathers in sharing their masterpieces to the whole world. The media of the two - dimensional arts are paintings, drawings, prints, and photography. Paintings and drawings can be executed with oils, watercolors, tempera, acrylics, ink, and pencils to name a few of the more obvious. Each physical medium has its own characteristics. PAPER Paper is the most popular surface used for 2D artwork. Paper is available in various sizes, thickness, textures and colors. It is an organic medium made from cellulose pulp derived mainly from wood, certain grasses and linen rags. DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAPER SUPPORT Laid Paper paper process with a pattern of parallel lines created by the wires of the mold used for production. DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAPER SUPPORT Textured Pastel, Charcoal and Craft Paper This type of paper has fine irregular texture pressed into the surface during the process of its manufacture. This paper is good for pastel and charcoal and can be used for layering but not for heavy layering. DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAPER SUPPORT Wove Paper This paper is made on a woven wire “cloth” like a fine sleeve. This paper is best for ink drawing and realistic pencil drawing DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAPER SUPPORT Rough Grained Paper This paper has a “bumpy” surface. This is a favorite of watercolor artist. DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAPER SUPPORT Medium Paper This paper has a fine grain which can look subtle when shading with a sharpened pencil. CANVAS a firm closely woven cloth usually of linen, hemp, or cotton used for clothing and formerly much used for tents and sails WOOD Known as hardboard which is a board or panel that is made from wood. It offers rigid surface results in less cracking in the paint. DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOOD IN SUPPORT IN ARTS Masonite is a trademarked brand name of particular type of board made from wood fibers and glue (fibers) that is molded into a flat board DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOOD IN SUPPORT IN ARTS Plywood Plywood is a composite material manufactured from thin layers, or "plies", of wood veneer that have been stacked and glued together. DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOOD IN SUPPORT IN ARTS Laminate Board This has mica film on its surface to give it resistance and strength. WALL This support may be traditionally made of stone. It is used for mural paintings. CHARCOA L Organic drawing material from burnt wood. It was said to be of the easiest media to learn. TWO FORMS OF CHARCOAL Vine Charcoal Thick sticks and is easy to blend and erase. TWO FORMS OF CHARCOAL Compressed Charcoal Made up of loose charcoal pressed into a stick. It creates a much darker black than vine charcoal. GRAPHITE Type of medium is easy to use and not as messy as charcoal It has different tones, the higher the “B” number, the softer the lead and the softer the lead, the darker the tone. BRUSH Its main function is to transfer paint mixtures to the surface. It can be classified by the hair type and shape. CLASSIFICATION OF BRUSHES BY HAIR TYPE Sable Brush Known for its resiliency and cause less damage than a bristle brush. It can also hold a good amount of pigment and water. CLASSIFICATION OF BRUSHES BY HAIR TYPE Bristle Brush This is use for thickly prepared paints and are capable of spreading paints in impasto consistencies. CLASSIFICATION OF BRUSHES BY HAIR TYPE Flat Brush It is usually ideal for making board strokes. Oriental Brush These brushes differ from the brushes used in the West both in the materials used and in appearance. BRUSH SIZE IDENTIFICATION BRUSH SIZE The sizes of brushes are coded in numeric designations. French Scale - 000 Standard English to 8 Scale - 1 to 12
