Lesson 4 MIS Prepared by: Angelina Marie R. Santos, MBA EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Objective: To explore the emerging technologies of cloud computing, mobile computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), and understand their implications for Management Information Systems (MIS). Introduction to Emerging Technologies Emerging technologies refer to new and innovative tools, platforms, and methodologies that have the potential to disrupt traditional business practices and enhance operational efficiencies. Importance in MIS: These technologies are reshaping how organizations manage information, improve decision-making, and engage with customers. Cloud Computing - is the delivery of computing services—servers, storage, databases, networking, software, and analytics—over the Internet (“the cloud”). Types of Cloud Computing ⚬ Public Cloud: Services offered over the public Internet ⚬ Private Cloud: Dedicated infrastructure for a single organization, offering more control and security. ⚬ Hybrid Cloud: A combination of public and private clouds, allowing data and applications to be shared between them. Benefits of Cloud Computing for MIS Organizations can easily scale resources up or down based on demand. Reduces the need for physical infrastructure and maintenance costs. Facilitates remote access to data and applications, enhancing collaboration. Virtualization - is the creation of virtual versions of physical hardware, allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical server. Types of Virtualization: ⚬ Server Virtualization: Partitioning a physical server into multiple virtual servers. ⚬ Desktop Virtualization: Hosting desktop environments on a central server. Benefits of Virtualization for MIS Simplifies backup and recovery processes, ensuring business continuity. Enables the creation of isolated environments for testing new applications without impacting the production system Mobile Computing - involves the use of portable computing devices (smartphones, tablets) that allow users to access and process data anywhere, anytime. Applications: ⚬ Mobile applications for business processes (e.g., CRM, project management). ⚬ Mobile-friendly websites and e-commerce platforms. Benefits of Mobile Computing for MIS: Employees can access information on-the-go, facilitating timely decision-making. Businesses can reach customers through mobile apps and notifications, improving service delivery. Mobile devices enable real-time data collection from customers, enhancing market analysis. Internet of Things (IoT) - refers to the interconnected network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies to collect and exchange data over the Internet. Applications: Smart homes (e.g., smart thermostats, security systems). Industrial IoT (e.g., sensors on machinery for predictive maintenance). Benefits of IOT for MIS: IoT devices generate vast amounts of data, providing businesses with actionable insights for better decision-making. Automation of processes through IoT can lead to reduced operational costs and increased efficiency. Real-time data can be used to personalize services and products based on customer preferences. Emerging technologies like cloud computing, virtualization, mobile computing, and IoT are revolutionizing the landscape of Management Information Systems. Organizations must be proactive in adopting these technologies to stay competitive while addressing security and integration challenges. Thank You
