PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2 THE INTRODUCTION AND THE BACKGROUND OF IN THIS SECTION, YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT: the introduction the background of the study characteristics of a good background of the study THE INTRODUCTION Most research papers start with an introduction chapter or section. The primary purpose of the introduction chapter or section is to give the readers an overview of what the entire study is all about. It aims to introduce the readers to the research topic and the research problem that the study is trying to address. It should persuade the reader that the study is important and interesting The introduction section or chapter should generally include: Background of the Study The Statement of the problem the research questions or objective the significance of the study the scope and delimitations The Background of the Study is discussed in Section 2, the Statement of the Problem and the Research Questions are discussed in Section 3, and the Significance of the Study and the Scope and Delimitations are discussed in detail in Section 4. THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The introduction section or chapter of a research study typically begins with a background of the study. the primary purpose of the background is to provide the reader with the context and explain the circumstances that led to the study. It can discuss briefly the specific problem or situation, conflict of ideas, gaps in knowledge, literature, or theories that caught your attention as a researcher and compelled you to select your particular research topic. It answers the question, “Why are you studying this particular research topic?” It can tell the reader why you are personally or academically interested in studying your chosen topic and what you intend to accomplish. The background of the study often begins with a description or overview of a situation or idea of interest to the researcher. Communicative Competency of the Teacher-Education Students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manggas II, Alfonso, Cavite for the A.C 2020-2021 CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING INTRODUCTION Communicating effectively in a language requires the speaker’s good grasp of linguistic, sociolinguistic and socio-cultural components of that language. This perception will enable him to use the right language in the proper context f or the right cause and then he can be referred to as Speaking fluently is important to every individual at it will be the basis of whether you are a good speaker or not. In the Philippines, it is recognized globally as one of the largest English-speaking nations with majority of its population having at least some degree of fluency in the language. English has always been one of the official languages of the Philippines and is spoken by more than 14 million Filipinos. It is the language of commerce and law, as well as the primary medium of instruction in education. (MIKE CABIGON Nov.2015) According to Deduney and Hockly (2010), English-speaking countries include the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Many countries, including India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nigeria, and Kenya, use English as a second language and have high levels of English proficiency among their residents. One of the fascinating aspects of English as a global language is that it is gradually being used as a 'lingua franca’ or (common language), allowing people from non- English-speaking countries to interact with those who do. The common language at a business meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, with participants from China, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, for example, is typically English. A business conference in Germany with participants from Sweden and France, for example, is almost always conducted in English. The purpose of the study is to determine the communicative competency of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Alfonso Campus Education students when it comes to foreign language which pertains to what problems are commonly issues regarding to communicate fluently. The study aims to investigate if there are relationship between the profile of education students and their level of communicative competency. Characteristics of a good Background of the Study should be concise clearly written persuasive STATING THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND FORMULATING THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION, YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT: the statement of the problem the research questions three common types of research questions in quantitative research the main question and the sub questions formulating research questions what makes a good research question is STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Once you have identified your research problem, you need to write it down and communicate it. This is called the statement of the problem (research puzzle). The statement of the problem is usually found in the introduction chapter of the research paper or article. In writing this section, you need to problematize your topic and explicitly identify the specific situation, problem, or issue. RESEARCH QUESTION After stating the research problem, the next step is formulating your research question A well- articulated research question provides clear direction, while a poorly constructed one lacks direction and confuses you and the reader. research questions guide the literature search guide you on what research design to use (e.g., qualitative vs. quantitative guides the researcher about what data to collect and from whom it is important in analyzing and presenting the data limit the scope of the study and prevent the research from going off in different directions provide a clear sense of what the research is about and what it wishes to achieve In formulating research questions, be guided by the following characteristics: 1. Focused. When the center of your study relies on a single problem or concern. Think exactly what you want to investigate or achieve from the beginning till the end of the research process. 2. Researchable. When the research question is empirically1 verifiable and can be tested scientifically. 3. Flexible. The number of specific questions should be enough to cover the development of the whole problem of the study. Make sure you have enough time and resources to answer the 4. Specific. When the research question is well defined and clearly stated. You must state your research questions in a way that they include all dependent and independent and independent variables referred to by the theories, principles or concepts underlying your research work 5. Complex. Research questions should not be answerable by “YES” or “NO” or by easily found facts. Use the “How” questions instead of closed question to provide room for investigation and discussion. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study aims to identify the communicative competency of the Teacher-Education Students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manggas II, Alfonso, Cavite for the A.C 2020-2021. This study envisions answering the following specific questions: 1) What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: a) Age b) Sex c) Field of specialization 2) The level of communicative competence of the respondents in terms of: a) linguistic/grammatical competence b) Discourse competence c) Sociolinguistic Competence d) Strategic Competence e) Socio-cultural Competence 3) Is there any significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their level of communicative competence? The Significance and Scope and Delimitations of the Study IN THIS SECTION, YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT: the significance of the study the scope and delimitations of the study The significance of the Study While you may believe that your research is important, the significance of your research is not always apparent to the reader. To establish the significance of your study, there are three basic questions we 1.Why is the study important? 2.What are its contributions to the discipline? 3.To whom will it be important? These basic questions can be broken down to several specific inquiries such as: What are the implications of conducting this research? How does the study connect to another knowledge? Why is the study important to our understanding of the world? What are the uses of my findings to existing THANK YOU SO MUCH
