According to UN Tourism, tourism is a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon involving people traveling outside their usual environment. There are different types of tourism including: domestic tourism, outbound tourism, and inbound tourism. Tourists stay at least one night at the destination, while excursionists make trips of less than 24 hours. Early travel was driven by religious, commercial, military, and leisure purposes. The Grand Tour was a traditional educational journey undertaken by young European aristocrats from the 17th to the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution boosted mass tourism by improving transportation and raising the income of the middle classes. Improvements in working conditions, including paid holidays, increased tourism activity. Travelling not was a privilege. Thomas Cook was a tourism pioneer who established the first travel agencies and organized tours. Trains made travel more accessible, helping to develop modern tourism. There are tourism institutions, organisations and associations, which may be public and/or private, that are in charge of promoting tourism and tourism practices.
