Lecture 5 Musculoskeletal System The Skeleton Function of Skeletal System ❑ Framework of the body. ❑ Protect internal organs. ❑ Act as Storehouse for minerals. ❑ Allow Movement. The Skeleton It is divided for study into : The axial skeleton consists of the skull, the spinal column, the ribs, and the sternum. Appendicular Skeleton consists of bones of the upper and lower limbs and their girdles The difference The difference between the axial and appendicular skeletons Bones Bone types Short bones Examples: the bones of the ankles, wrists, and toes. Long bones legs arms, and fingers. Irregular bones vertebrae and the bones of the middle ear. Flat bones Examples: bones of the skull, shoulder blades, and sternum.
