THEOLOGY1 University Prayer Lord God of all wisdom, We pray for La Consolacion University Philippines that she may be faithful to the purposes of our foundresses, Mo. Rita and Venerable Mo. Consuelo. Continue to promote the search for truth and knowledge and be an inspiration for others who follow. May we be a community of scholars sharing this ambition, caring for one another, and being loyal to the truth revealed to us as your disciples. AMEN. LESSON 2 Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church Learning Objectives; explain the biblical accounts and traditions regarding Mary's role as the mother of Jesus and her significance in salvation history; develop a sense of spiritual kinship with Mary as a fellow disciple of Jesus and a source of inspiration in navigating life's challenges; and engage in personal devotions to Mary to cultivate a deeper relationship and spiritual connection. Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church Mary’s Parents St. Joachim Joachim was a wealthy and devout man from Nazareth. In Christian tradition, he is seen as humble and dedicated to God. He and his wife Anne faced criticism and shame because they were childless for many years. Despite this, they remained faithful and prayed for a child. Their perseverance is often admired, and they are recognized for their strong faith. Eventually, they were blessed with a daughter, Mary, who would become the mother of Jesus. Mary’s Parents St. Anne Anne is traditionally known as the wife of Joachim and the mother of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is often depicted as a devout and virtuous woman. According to tradition, Anne experienced shame and reproach because she was childless for a long time, which was considered a significant social stigma in her time. Eventually, she was blessed with Mary, fulfilling her long-held desire for motherhood. Mary’s Birth St. Joachim and St. Anne, are found in the Protoevangelium of James. This apocryphal text, dated to the 2nd century, provides an account of the birth and early life of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary was born in a special and miraculous manner, free from the stain of original sin. This aligns with the later Christian doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which declares that Mary was conceived without original sin.
