Introduction Chemical analysis shows that the human body is made up of specific chemical elements. Four of these elements—oxygen, carbon, hydrogen & nitrogen— make up 96% of body weight. All the remaining elements are minerals, which represent only 4% of body weight. Nevertheless, these minerals are essential for good health. Minerals: are inorganic elements that are necessary for the body to build tissues, regulate body fluids, or assist in various body functions. Introduction Body contains 22 known minerals → majority of which are essential to life. They present 4–5 % of body weight o 50% of this weight is from calcium o 25% phosphorous (phosphate) 99% of calcium and 70% of phosphorous are in the bones & teeth. Introduction Minerals are classified to: Macro-minerals (Major minerals) >100 mg/day Micro-minerals (Trace minerals)
