HCI (*Human Computer Interaction*) \- the study of how people interact with computers & to what extent are and are not developed for successful interaction with human beings. \- this research originally went under the name man-machine interaction, & became human-computer interaction in recognition of the particular interest in computers & the composition of the user population. \- undoubtedly a *multi-disciplinary* subject \- focuses on the way that human beings & computers interact to ever increasing levels of both complexity & simplicity \- HCI is an area of research & practice that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s (*an area in Computer Science*) \- HCI consists three (3) parts: a\. USER \- an individual or a group of users working together \- an appreciation of the way people's sensory systems (*sight, hearing, touch*) \- *different users from different conceptions* or mental models about their interactions & have different ways of learning and keeping knowledge. \- *cultural* & *national* differences play a part b\. COMPUTER \- refers to any technology ranging *from desktop computers to large scale computer systems* \- mobile phones, VCRs can be also considered to be "computers" c\. INTERACTION \- HCI attempts to *ensure that they both get on each other & interact successfully* \- apply what you know about humans and computers, and consult with likely users throughout the design process \- finding a balance between what would be ideal for the users and what is feasible in reality is *important* Multi-disciplinary field of HCI *Human-computer Interaction* a\. Computer Science \- provide knowledge about the capability of the technology & idea about how this potential can be harnessed b\. Cognitive Science \- understanding human behavior & mental proccesses that underlie it (*information proccessing*) \- understanding the nature & causes of human behavior in social context c\. Human Factors Engineering \- also known as ***ergonomics*** or ***human engineering*** \- science dealing with the application of information on physical & psychological characteristics to the design of devices and systems for human use History of HCI 1970s - **The Rise of the Personal Computer** \- the broad project of cognitive science, which incorporated cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, cognitive anthropology, and the philosophical of mind, *had formed at the end of 1970s* 1980s - **Graphical User Interface** (*GUI*) \- designed for the easier understanding of the users of the computers \- started the graphical interface which is easy to *use, understand, visualize*; it improved the working environment 1990s - **The Internet and Collaboration Works** \- the internet started the journey in 1990s; *[many technologies arrived for better communication]* 2000s - **Mobile Computing and Beyond** \- mobile phones, PDA (Personal Development Assistance), & Smartphones are *ruling the present world* \- offer a wide range of services to the people such as *SMS, MMS, multimedia, games, Email, internet, chatting, video conference, GPS*, et cetera
