Freight & Shipping Freight & Shipping Management Freight Shipping is the process of transporting commodities, goods and cargo by land, sea or air………..freightquote.com/define Common types of freight shipping over the road include truckload, less than truckload (LTL) and intermodal. The means of transport commonly associated with freight shipping are trucks, railroad cars and large ships carrying containers Why EXPORT IMPORT ? No country is self sufficient. And every country has some unique resource which others don’t. Reducing costs, specially manufacturing costs. Providing high quality products. Introduce new products & may Improve quality. Increasing sales potential. Increasing Profit. How can we send/receive our goods to/from overseas ? The answer is Sea Air Road Rail Let’s have our knowledge shared and know Sea Transportation, Freight & Shipping https://qpeople.co.uk/knowledge-hub/ Why Freight and Shipping Management is Important ? Seaborne trade accounted for 90% of global trade in terms of volume (qty) and 70% in terms of value (amount). Maritime shipping is one of the most globalized industries in terms of ownership and operations. Sea Transportation in Current Days Today’s Shipping Market have evolved into three separate but closely connected segments: Liner Shipping Bulk Shipping Specialized Shipping Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Based on Service provision : Types of Shipping Liner Service Tramp Service Single Voyage Charter Consecutive V. Charter Time Charter Trip Charter Bareboat Charter Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Liner Service : is a shipping service that operates its transportation, voyage or trip following a set of schedule and route. Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Tramp Service : Also know as tramper is a service that is even available at a short notice, so it does not follow any strict schedule or routes. Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Differences : Liner Shipping Tramp Shipping Liner service follows a fixed route and schedule as Tramp service does not have a fixed schedule or well as the destination. route, and is even available at a short notice. The liners follow pre-defined rules, terms and There are no such conditions for tramp services. conditions related to the carriage and delivery of the cargo. The liners have modern equipment through which Trampers generally do not take a huge load, they loading and unloading can be faster. prefer to transport one or two shippers consignment and limit their loading and loading to a lesser number of ports. The freight rates are fixed. The freight rates are negotiable and hence less expensive The liner ship is huge enough with many facilities Tramps are a little smaller and can carry only to carry variety of goods. simple and uniform cargo in larger quantities. It can carry only one kind of specific goods at a time. Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Based on need, shape and capacity different types of ships are operated around the world. Container/Box Ships carry their cargo packed into standard 20' or 40’ containers that are stacked both on and below deck. Smaller 'feeder' ships carry containers on coastal and inland waters. Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Ro-Ro (Roll-On/Roll-Off) vessels carry both road haulage and passenger vehicles. General Cargo Ships carry loose-packaged cargo of all types. Types of Shipping in Sea Transport Bulk carriers carry unpackaged goods - usually large volumes of single commodity goods i.e grain, coal, fertilizers etc. Tankers carry crude oil, refined petroleum and liquids like chemicals in bulk. Types of Vessels in Sea Transport Mother Vessel : Mother vessel is big in size compared to feeder vessel. Mother vessels only serve between major big ports. These vessels cover large distance with large payload compared to vessels. Any idea about Capacity of Mother Vessels ? Types of Vessels in Sea Transport Capacity of a Mother Vessel : Average capacity of a Mother Vessel is 10000 TEUs. In 1960s, vessel capacity was maximum of 500 - 800 TEUs. Mother vessel with a capacity of 24000 TEUs are available now. Types of Vessels in Sea Transport Feeder Vessel : Feeder vessel is normally small in size compared to Mother vessel. Feeder vessels serves between smaller ports and major ports. Average capacity of a feeder vessel is 300 to 500 TEUs Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Important Notes : The Maximum volumetric capacity of a 20 ft container is 27 CBM Weight equivalent of 1 CBM is 1 ton for LCL shipments Volume weight of Cargo = L x W x H (unit should be in METER) Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Example : Cargo dimension : 2.3 x 1.4 x 2.0 = 6.4 CBM Should we go for LCL or FCL booking ? 6.4 CBM of Cargo is not enough to fill a 20 ft container. Hence, the best option is to go for a LCL shipment and contact a Consolidator. Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Important Notes : The Maximum volumetric capacity of a 20 ft container is 27 CBM Weight equivalent of 1 CBM is 1 ton for LCL shipments Volume weight of Cargo = L x W x H (unit should be in METER) Gross Volume vs Weight-Based Volume Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Please mind your conversion Gross Volume = L x W x H (mind your conversion to meter) Weight-Based Volume = Actual Weight (kg) / 1000 Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Let’s find out the Chargeable Volume : Shipment (Cargo) Measurement: Length (l) = 40.16 in Width (w) = 38.58 in Height (h) = 41.73 in Gross weight = 1653.47 lb Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Solution: Start with GV and then Weight-based Volume Gross Volume = 40.16 in x 38.58 in x 41.73 in = 64,655.33 cubic inch (Now do the Conversion) = 64,655.33 61,024 cubic inches / 61,024 cubic inches = 1.06 CBM Weight-based Volume = 1653.47 lbs / 1000 (Now do the Conversion) = 750 kg / 1000 = 0.75 CBM Chargeable volume is 1.06 CBM Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Please find out the Chargeable Volume of the given shipment. Shipment Data: Length (l) = 47.25 in Width (w) = 63 in Height (h) = 45.28 in Gross weight = 12,000 lbs Number of boxes = 2 Ocean Freight (Liner Tariff) Solution: Step 1: Calculate the volume of the shipment = (47.25 in x 63 in x 45.28 in) x 2 Boxes = 269,574.48 cubic inch / 61,024 cubic inch = 4.42 CBM Thank you Your patience & enthusiasm are praiseworthy
