Fitting & Drilling Machine Dr Mutlag Shafi Fuhaid Fitting is the process of assembling various parts manufactured in the machine shop. The various types of tools used in the fitting workshop are as follows: 1. Holding Tools 2. Marking Tools 3. Measuring Tools 4. Cutting & Finishing Tools 5. Striking Tools 1- Holding Tools used in Engineering Workshop Bench Vice is a holding tool that is used to hold the specimen or the workpiece between the two jaws. C-Clamp This is used to hold work against an angle plate, V-block, or any other surface when gripping is required. It is also known as G-clamp. 2- Marking Tools Marking tools are used to mark any dimensions on the surface of a workpiece. Marking tools can vary, as can the specimens used in the workshop and those you will see in the engineering workshop. There are 3 types of marking tools used in the fitting workshop, which are as follows: 1- Scriber A scriber is a steel tool used to scribe or mark lines on metal workpieces. It can be used in conjunction with a try square. 2-Dot Punch It is used to specify the path of cutting. Firstly, the path is to be marked with a scriber, and then, with the help of a dot punch, the path is hit by a hammer. 3-CenterPunch This is similar to the dot punch, except that it is ground to a conical point with a 118-degree included angle. It is used to mark the location of the holes to be drilled. Center Punch 3- Measuring Tools used in Engineering Workshop: Measuring tools are used to measure any component's dimensions. Without these tools, it is not easy to measure the accurate values of the given components. Some of the measuring tools used in the fitting workshop are as follows. 1- Steel rule & Measuring Tape. 2- Divider. 3- Try square. 4- Caliper ( Inside Caliper, Odd leg caliper, and outside Caliper). 5- Micrometer. 6- Vernier Caliper. 4- Cutting and finishing Tools used in Fitting Workshop: Cutting Tools are used to cut the given specimen The Cutting Tools used in Engineering Workshop are: Hacksaw (Cutting Tool). Hacksaw is used for cutting of rods, bars, pipes, flats etc. Files (Finishing Tool): Though it is a finishing tool, it comes under, cutting tools only. Files are multi-point cutting tools. They are used to remove the material by rubbing on the metals(workpieces) to get a good surface finish. Files are available in a number of sizes, shapes, and degrees of coarseness. The various types of Files are as follows: Flat file, Square file, Triangular file, Round file, Half-round file, and Swiss or Needle file. Methods of Filing: There are two methods of filing. Cross Filing: Filing in a direction perpendicular to the axis of a component is called Cross Filing. This filing method is used mostly in the Fitting Workshop. Draw Filing: Filing in a direction parallel to the axis of a component is called Draw Filing. 5- Striking Tools used in Engineering Workshop: These tools are used to strike or hit the workpiece by the application of external force. The Three Types of striking tools used in carpentry workshops are as follows. 1- Cross-peen hammer 2- Claw hammer 3- Mallet Malle t Claw hammer The body has two parts. They are face It is used for striking as It is used to strike the chisel on a and Peen. well as for pulling the nails wooden component. In a cross-peen hammer, the peen is in from the wood. It is made up of hardwood or the form of a narrow round edge used rubber and is round or to remove the unwanted material from rectangular. the workpiece. Drilling Machine Drilling is the operation of making hole in a workpiece by using a rotating tool called a drill. The sharp edges ground at lower end of the of the drill cuts the material by peeling it circularly layer by layer. The removed metal chips gets curled and escapes through the helical groove provided in the drill. A power operated machine tool, which holds the drill in its spindle rotating at high speeds and produces a hole in a workpiece is called Drilling Machine. Drill spindle motor A long radial arm can move Elevating screw Radial arm along the column & also swing around it. The arm carries a drill head Column Drill head which can also move to & fro Drill bit along it. Work Table These combinations of motion offers great flexibility for Base positioning the drill bit over the work. Drilling tool materials 1. High carbon steel 2. High speed steel (HSS) 3. Carbide 4. Ceramic 5. Diamond Drilling Machine Apart Operations from drilling, a number of other operations that can be performed on a drilling machine are; 1. Drilling 2. Reaming 3. Boring 4. Counterboring 5. Countersinking 6. Spot facing 7. Tapping Drilling Operation Drilling is the process of producing or enlarging a hole. This is accomplished by rotating the tool. The of tool called drill Reaming Reaming - It is an accurate way of sizing and finishing the hole which has been previously drilled. The tool used for reaming is known as reamer which has multiple cutting edges Spring 2005 Boring Boring tool Boring is the operation of enlarging a hole by Drilled hole means of an adjustable cutting tool with only one cutting edge. It is used when a suitable drill size is not available. P R Venkatesh,Mech Dept, RVCE, B'lore Counterboring Operation Counterboring - It is the process of enlarging the end of a hole cylindrically. The enlarged hole forms square shoulder with the original hole. The tool used for counter boring is called as counter bore.. Counterbo ring Counterbore Tool Pilot Counterbored hole Countersinking Operation Countersinking - It is the operation of making a cone shaped enlargement of the end of a hole to provide a recess for a flat head screw fitted into the hole. The tool used for countersinking is called as countersink Countersin Countersink Tool king Countersink P R Venkatesh,Mech Dept, RVCE, B'lore Spot Spotfacing Tool facing Spotfacing is the operation of Spotfaced surface machining a flat, circular surface around a hole to provide a seat for a bolt head, nut or washer. The spot face cutter is similar to a counterbore, but has teeth on the end only.
