ENVI Midterm Studying: 10/16 Slide 1: - Environmental Studies and sustainability places importance on maintaining the environment for future generations. - The three E’s are Equity, Environment, and Economy. In between the three E’s, there is Sustainability - Earth is a complex system made up of subsystems Slide 2: - As Economy, Equity, and the Environment work together, sustainability increases - A system is made up of elements, and these elements come together to serve a greater purpose - A cell is a system, an animal is a system, a tree is a system, the lungs are a system, and the ecosystem is a big system - Causal loop diagrams demonstrate whether it’s a positive (amplifies change) or negative feedback loop (reduces change), by showing how elements of a system interact - Other diagrams for sustainability systems include the stool diagram and the diagram with the circles within each other - Sustainability has 3 factors: - Enduring into the future - The 3 E’s - Breaking down silos/ understanding systems - Subsystems have different purposes - A reinforcing loop causes output to spiral up or down - A balancing loop slows up or down change in output - Time delay: the time between the input of a feedback stimulus and the response to it - Tipping point/threshold level: fundamental shift in the behavior of the system -
