DDG Ass #15 - Key Terms and Concepts Improvable—Diamond that can be repolished to improve clarity to a VVS1 or VVS2 grade. Potential—Diamond that can be repolished to improve clarity to an Internally Flawless grade. Recutting—Repairing damage or refashioning a polished diamond to improve its clarity, proportions, or color, or to modernize an old-style cut. Repolishing—Refinishing a polished diamond to correct minor faults in its clarity or finish. Key Concepts: A mounting almost always limits your ability to assess a diamond. A grader can use reflections to see inclusions hidden by prongs. Practice is the key to accurate weight estimation. Proportion variations like thick girdles can affect the accuracy of estimated weights. The weight correction factors for fancy cuts allow for variations that aren’t seen in rounds. Diamonds in jewelry are vulnerable to damage. The ultimate recutting consideration is the value of the finished diamond. Today, there’s equal interest in maintaining or creating old-style cuts and in recutting them as modern brilliants. A diamond’s original cutting style largely governs its style when recut. Before recutting a diamond for sale, you should know what the market demand for the new shape will be. Cutters usually work with angles rather than percentages, so that’s what jewelers should provide.
