Animal Kingdom The animal kingdom is one of the largest kingdoms found on Earth. In this lesson, we will explore what the difference is between vertebrates and invertebrate animals. Classifying animals in the Engage Animal Kingdom There are two million different species of animals have been identified on Planet Earth and ten thousand more species of animals are discovered every year. These animals have been classified into nine major phyla or phylum. A phylum is a smaller group within a kingdom. Watch the following video to learn about the two After watching the video, in your own words types of phylum present in the animal kingdom. describe the key difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. Provide two examples of each. Vertebrates Invertebrates Explore Breaking it down further... Vertebrates are animals with a backbone. A vertebrate’s skeleton is on the inside. All of these animals share a few common characteristics: 1. Each has a nervous system that has a brain and a spinal cord. 2. All vertebrates have bones. These types of animals can be classified into five different classes: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Most of the animals that we share the earth with are invertebrates. Some of the best known invertebrates are arthropods. Arthropods are invertebrate animals having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and paired jointed appendages. There are three classes of arthropods: arachnids, crustaceans and insects. Arachnids Crustaceans Insects To learn more about each of the three different classes, click on each image. Reflecting on your new Explain knowledge Respond to the following questions: 1. Name two basic structural characteristics of a vertebrate. 2. What two things does a backbone help an animal do? 3. Which classes of vertebrates are warm blooded? What can warm blooded animals do that cold blooded animals cannot? 4. Why do you think arthropod’s have segmented bodies? 5. Which group of invertebrates would each belong to: bumble bee, snail, crayfish and an earthworm. Most mammals have hair as an outer protective covering. Most have four appendages, usually legs. Some examples of mammals are human beings, cats, whales, deer, seals, elephants, bears and mice. If you were to classify a whale with the knowledge you have now, you would put it in: Kingdom - Animal Phylum - Chordata Class - Mammals Vertebrate ~ Birds Birds are also warm blooded vertebrates that breathe air. They lay eggs, and young birds Use the space below to hatch out of the eggs. Birds have feathers as an outer protective covering. Most birds can fly, but some cannot. Examples of flightless birds include: the ostrich, the penguin, and the turkey. Modern day birds have a bill (or beak) and no teeth. Vertebrate ~ Amphabians Frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders are amphibians. They are cold blooded vertebrates. This means that they do not Use the space below to add any interesting facts have an internal temperature-control system, that you discovered while so their body temperature changes with the watching the video. temperature of their environment. Most amphibians live on land and lay their eggs in the water, where the young hatch. Young amphibians breathe oxygen from the water they live in, while adults amphibians breathe air. Amphibians are covered with smooth, moist skin. They are cold blooded, and almost all have an outer covering of scales. Fish have fins as appendages, and they breathe using gills. As they swim, water passes over their gills, which remove oxygen from the water. Vertebrate ~ Reptiles Snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and Use the space below to alligators are reptiles. Usually reptiles lay eggs, but some give birth to live young. Most have limbs, but snakes do not. Reptiles have scales as an outer protective covering. Daddy longlegs, mites and ticks, are still considered arachnids, however, they only have one part to their body. Invertebrate ~ Crustaceans Crustaceans are some of the most important marine animals. Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae. They have mouths made up of one pair of mandibles (which are eating appendages behind the crustacean's antennae) and two pairs of maxillae (the mouth parts located after the mandibles). Most crustaceans are free-ranging, like lobsters and crabs, and some even migrate long distances. But some, like barnacles. Invertebrate ~ Insects An insect is a very small animal with particular characteristics. Most insects walk, but some can fly and jump. They need water, air, and food to live. Most insects have five basic physical Use the space below to characteristics: add any interesting facts that you discovered while 1. Insects have a pair of antennae on top of their heads. 4. Insects have three pairs of legs. They use the legs for walking, but sometimes an insect may have a pair of legs that are specially designed for jumping. 5. Insects have two pairs of wings.
