LO: Life cycles of animals Lesson 3 & 4 Science Year 6 - Term 1 Week 2 Classifying living things and their life cycles. LO: Classifying animals into invertebrates and vertebrates Lesson 1 & 2 Let’s start with the Vertebrates! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 1. Mammals Mammals feed milk to their young. The young look like their parents. Most mammals do not lay eggs. They also take care of their young. Mammals use lungs to breathe in air. Mammals have fur/hair. Even dolphins and whales have hair/fur. Mammals do not have feathers. 2. Fish Fish live in water. They have scales. Fish breathe oxygen through their gills. Their eggs do not have a shell. 3. Reptiles Reptiles live their life on land or in water. Some examples include a turtle, lizard, snake. They lay eggs to produce young. The eggs have soft shells. They do not take care of their young. Reptiles have dry scaly skin. 4. Birds Birds have feathers. They lay eggs (hard shells). Birds DO take care of their young. Mothers feed their young. Not all birds can fly - penguins and ostriches do not fly. L3 5. Amphibians Amphibians can live both on land and in water through their life… they start off their life in water and as adults live on land - e.g. a frog, toad, salamander. Their eggs have a soft shell. They have moist skin. The young DO NOT look like their parents. The young start out with a tail and gills. These disappear and legs and lungs grow. KAHOOT https://create.kahoot.it/details/cadc8247-dda3-4ef3-a49a-54746d7e4184 Invertebrates - Types of invertebrates Arthropods (spiders, insects, lobsters, crabs, centipede) Annelids (worms) Sponges Cnidarians (jellyfish) Mollusks (snails) Echinoderms (starfish) Invertebrates - Let’s focus on the Arthropods. Arthropods - Insects Insects usually have 3 body sections, 6 legs and 2 antennae (sense). They use their antennae to smell and sense. Their skeleton is on the outside of their body. (Exoskeleton) Most insects produce eggs. Examples : Wasp, Butterflies, Ladybird, Ant Invertebrates - Let’s focus on the Arthropods. Arthropods - Spiders 8 legs, 2 body parts. Invertebrates - Let’s focus on the Mollusks. Mollusks - Snails and slugs Slimy foot. Some have shells.
