Ch. 11 Roaring 20’s Review Key Terms: (Define the following) Installment Buying: When a consumer would make a small downpayment and then pay off the rest of the debt in regular monthly payments. This allowed Americans to own products they might have otherwise had to save up for years in order to buy. Harlem Renaissance: Novelists, poets, and artists celebrated their culture and explored questions of race in America. This flowering of African American culture was known as the Harlem Renaissance. Sigmund Freud: Freud argued that much of human behavior is driven not by rational though but by unconscious desires. Dawes Plan: Arranges US loans to Germany. By enabling Germany to make reparation payments to Britain and France, the Dawes Plan helped Britain and France to repay their debts to the US. Flapper: Rejection of Moderninity, Young Women with short skirts and rouged cheeks who had their hair cropped close in a style known as a bob. Scopes Trial : A trail revolving around the theory of evolution, developed by Darwin. Darwin believed that complex forms of life, such as human beings had developed gradually from simpler forms of life. This clashed with ideas from the Bible. The Jazz Singer: The first movie with sound, synchronized sound to the action. bull market: A period of rising stock markets. Jazz: Musical form based on improvisation. Prohibition: The banning of alcohol use. Charles Lindbergh: An airman who took off from Long Island, NY, in a small single engine plane. He flew nonstop to Paris, France. Marcus Garvey: Founded the UNIA, which was an African American Movement. 21st Amendment: Undid prohibition. Roaring Twenties Concept Questions 1. How did Henry Ford and the automobile change American life? Using the Assemby Line, Ford was able to decrease the cost of automobiles, which allowed middle class families to travel for vacation and go places. 2. How did the booming economy of the 1920’s lead to changes in American life? This allowed them to make purchases for items that they would otherwise be unable to buy. Installment plans allowed Americans to make payments over months on items. 3. How was the 18th Amendment successful? And a failure? The 18th Amendment decreased the amount of workers that had to be laid off and increased productivity at work. 4. The American movie industry was controlled by a handful of huge studios in Hollywood, Cali 5. Why was the Scopes Trial a hot topic during the 1920’s? This is because the Bible and Science have conflicts of ideas of evolution. 6. What was the impact of the Jazz Age? It introduced a new type of music that other citizens would never have heard, it caused a cultural change. 7. Describe the conflict between Modernism and Fundamentalism? Modernism revolved around science and Fundamentalism revolved around the Bible. 8. In what ways did women make advancements in the 1920’s? They advocated for the 18th amendment/prohibition. They also underwent a new look, with a modern look. 9. Describe the stock market in the 1920’s. Booming and very successful. 10. What was the consumer revolution? (draw it out / list the steps) A flood of new and affordable goods which became available to the public. The widespread availability of electrical power supported the consumer revolution, 11.
