**Concept of Immunity in Ayurveda** ** Factors that influence immunity. Role of treatments like; Rasayana, Panchkarma etc. Concept of Ojas, Agni, Bala,Auto-immune** **Concept and components of immunity in Ayurveda** The word immunity means the state of preservation from infectious disease. The immune system evolved as defense system to protect body from invading microorganisms and malignant disorders. Immunology is a branch of biomedical science that covers the studies of all aspects of the immune response in all organisms. **Ayurvedic system of medicine not only deals with treating the diseases but also aims to prevention the disease.** **Vyadhikshamatva (Immunity) is described in Ayurveda and this concept is considered similar to immune systems. the term Vyadhikshamathva is** **formed by two words vyadhi & kshamathva. Vyadhi -- Disease and Kshamathva -- Resistance.** In few words immunity in Ayurveda refers to preventation of disease and quick recovery from disease. According to Ayurveda, **Vyadhi is conditions which come into existence as consequence of non-equilibrium between Doshas** (physiological factors i.e vata, pitta & kapha), Dhatus (tissues systems) and Malas (excretory products of body). These factors, in their normal status are responsible in maintaining the physical and psychological health. The other word, Kshamatva‟ is derived from, Kshamus sahane‟ which means to be patient or composed to suppress anger, to keep quite or to resist. Therefore Vyadhikshamatwa means the factor which limits the pathogenesis and opposes the strength of disease. Vyadhi-balavirodhitvam: It is the capacity to restrain or withstand the strength (severity) of the diseases i.e. strength to resist the progress of disease. Vyadhi-utpadakapratibandhakatva: The resisting power of the body competent enough to prevent the occurrence and re-occurrence of the disease. There are **nine factors mentioned in Ayurveda which promotes body towards incapability to resist the disease manifestation** i.e. factors responsible for decreasing immunity. 1\) Ati- Sthoola (Excessively obese persons) 2\) Ati-Krisha (Excessively emaciated person) 3\) Anivista-Mamsa (Individual having improper musculature) 4\) Anivista-Asthi (persons having defective bone tissues) 5\) Anivista-Shonita (persons with defective blood) 6\) Durbala (Constantly weak person) 7\) Asatmya-Aaharopachita (Those nourished with unwholesome food) 8\) Alpa-Aaharopachita (Those taking diet in small quantity) 9) Alpa-Sattva (Individuals with feeble mind). **Relation of Vyadhikshamatva with various factors:** **Sleshma Kapha-** is one of the [Tridosha (three humors-Vata, Pitta and Kapha] which are said to be responsible for maintenance of homeostasis or equilibrium in the body), which possesses properties such as Snigdha (unctousness), Sita (cold, producing coldness), Guru (heavy) Manda (slow in action), Slaksna (smooth), Mrtsna (slimy) and Sthira (stable/static). Sleshma in normal state considered as Bala and Oja while in abnormal state it is Mala (waste) and Papma (diseases) Function of normal Kapha is like that of Ojas. Kapha in normal state provides compactness, stability, heaviness, virility, immunity, resistance, courage and gracelessness. **Hita and Ahita food**- Some food substances are wholesome and suitable for the body as the body can inheritably transfer those substances into its own by virtue of Jatisatmya. These are called as Satmya or Hita substances. **Water, ghee milk and rice are few examples of general wholesome food** as these are completely suitable for every human. On the other contrary some substance do not suit to the body and cause some adverse reaction. These are known as Ahita or Asatmya substances. **Fire-burns, alkalis-cauterize, toxin-kills** these are the examples of Ahita substance. **Relation of Bala and Vyadhikshamatva** Health of an individual depends upon good strength of the body tissues. It is difficult to treat the disease occurred in one whose body strength is low and hence Acharya Charaka prefers the Bala (strength) examination of an individual before starting the treatment. Types of Bala- It is of three types Sahaja (constitutional), Kalaja (temporal) and Yuktikrutajabala (acquired). Sahaja Bala- Constitutional strength is the one which exists in the mind and body from the very birth. Kalaja Bala- Temporal strength is the one which is based on division of seasons and age of the person. In Adana kala (late winter, spring and summers) Bala of individual will be less and in Visarga kala (rainy seasons, autumn and winter) it will be more. Bala will be Alpa (minimum) in child and old age, Uttama (maximum) in young age. Yuktikrutaja Bala- Acquired strength is the one which is achieved by the combination of diet and physical activities.**There are 12 factors responsible for increasing Bala** **(strength) of the body.** A. Birth in a country where people are naturally strong. B. Birth at a time when people naturally gain strength i.e. Hemanta (November to January) and Shisira (January to March) C. Favorable deposition of time (pleasant and moderate climate) D. Excellence in the qualities of seed i.e. sperm and ovum, and Asaya i.e. proper anatomical and physiological status of uterus of mother E. Excellence of the ingested food. The individuals possessing most of these factors are naturally immune i.e. Vyadhikshamatva for diseases. **Relation between Agni (food assimilation power of body) and Vyadhikshama** Dehagni or Jatharagni (digestive power of stomach) is responsible for life, color (luster of the skin), strength, health, enthusiasm, plumpness, complexion, Ojas (energy), Tejas ( gleam of the body), other varieties of Agni and Prana (vitality). Extinction of this Jatharagni leads to death. Its proper maintenance helps a person to live a long life and its impairment gives rise to diseases. **Jatharagni is considered to be the root or the most important sustaining factor of living beings.** If Agni is impaired by an imbalance within, the Tridosha then metabolism will get affected, immune response and natural resistance will also be lowered. **Relation between Oja and Vyadhikshamatva** The essence of Saptadhatus (seven bodily tissues as from Rasa to Shukra Dhatu), i.e. Rasa (plasma and lymph), Rakta (blood cells), Mansa (connective and muscular tissue), Meda (body fats e.g. adipose tissue), Asthi (bones), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (reproductive systems) is called Oja and it is the seat for strength, hence called Bala. Ojas is Sara (essence) of Dhatus ending with Sukra; through located in the heart, it pervades all over body and control the working of the body. It is viscous, greasy, Somatmaka (preponderant in watery principal), clear (transparent) and slight reddish yellow in color. **Rasayana (Rejuvenation therapy) and Vyadhikshamatva Rasayana** means the way for attaining excellence in all body tissue through some special measures and medicines. **Benefits of Rasayana therapy** Long life (good), memory, great intelligence, perfect health, youthfulness, bright complexion and color bold voice and magnanimity, increase strength, of the body and sense organ, perfection in speech, sexual power and brilliance are all obtained from proper Rasayana therapy. **Classification of Rasayana According to method of use.** 1\) Kutipraveshika Rasayana (indoor Regimen) 2\) Vatatapika Rasayana (outdoor Regimen) **According to purpose** - 1) Aajasrika Rasayana (promoter of health by some drug regimen and can be consumed in all conditions 2\) Naimittika Rasayana (promoter of specific vitality in specific disease) 3\) Kamya Rasayana (promoter of health in specific way in normal individual). **Ayurvedic treasure for benefit of common people to improve health by using different Ayurvedic drugs**. Some examples are. A. Immunostimulatory effect of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. B. Macrophage activation property of Tinospora cordifolia C. Effect of some Indian herbs (Asparagus racemosus Willd, Tinospora cordifolia Willd., Withania somnifera Daul and Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle ex Benth.) on macrophage functions in mice. D. Immunoprotection by Withania somnifera Dunal, Tinospora cordifolia Willd. and Asparagus racemosus Willd. during cancer chemotherapy. E. Immunopotentiating property of Tinospora cordifolia Willd. F. Augmentation of non-specific immunity by gold preparations. G. Anti-cataleptic, anti-anxiety and antidepressant activity of gold children who do not sleep at night, eat too much, pass scanty urine and feces; **children who have increased digestive power,** though free from disease yet scraggy, have delicate body part and emaciated, do not pass urine and feces even for three days; such type of children should be prescribed lehana (electuaries). Acharya Kashyapa- 1. Svaran Prasana - Pure gold (in small quantity) is rubbed in water on a clean stone and given with honey and Ghrita, be given to child for licking. **Licking of gold** increase intellect, digestive power and metabolic power, strength, gives long life, is auspicious, virtuous, aphrodisiac, increase complexion and elimination the (evil effect of) Graha. **Acharya Sushruta** Sushruta has mentioned 4 recipes (containing gold) which provide general immunity, body resistance, helpful in growth and development and enhancing the intelligence. **Vyadhikshamatva - resistance to diseases or immunity** against diseases is of two kinds i.e. the one which attenuate the manifested disease and other variety prevents the manifestation of diseases. Doshas are vitiated due to continue taking unwholesome food ultimately production of excellent essence of Dhatus i.e Ojas is not done. Final and excellent essence of Dhatus beginning with **Rasa to Shukra is Ojus and that Ojus is said to be Bala**. The concept of Vyadhikshamatva is related with Kapha, Bala, Agni and Ojas. Ayurvedic **Rasayana therapy** in light of the concepts of modern immunology, particularly the immunomodulation will be quite rewarding. CONCLUSION Ayurvedic concept of Vyadhikshamatva is similar as normal condition of the Kapha, Bala and Oja. Oja is final and excellence of the product Dhatu and Vyadhikshamatva depends on it. Production of excellence of Dhatu depends on the Hita and Ahita Ahara and Agni. Rasayana therapy help in produce excellence Dhatu and lastly it convert into Oja, ultimetaly increase in Oja and similarly increase in immunity. Many researches proved immunomodulatary effect of drugs which are used in Rasayana therapy. Medhya Rasayana (Nootropics drugs) is life-promoting, disease alleviating, promoters of strength, Agni, complexion, voice and intellect-promoting. Lehana will be also helpful in the improve immunity. **INTEGRATING AYURVEDIC CONCEPTS OF IMMUNITY AND ITS ENHANCEMENT** This homeostasis among the supporting elements of the mind and body is known as dhaatu saamya in Ayurveda. Ayurveda has laid greater emphasis on the maintenance of equilibrium state of tissue elements to achieve the two basic objectives i.e. preservation of health in healthy individual and eradication of diseases which are curable. It is clearly mentioned that a person who is having balanced proportion of muscles, compactness, firmness and excellent sensory faculties never suffers from such diseases. Such people can easily tolerate the extremes of hunger, thirst, heat of the sun, cold and physical exercises. They have balanced agni and normal metabolism. **Role of rasayan therapy to improve immunity** Promotion of health in Ayurveda is achieved by Rasayan drugs as Guduci, Ashwgandha, Silajatu, Amalaki and many more. Acharya Chakrapaani has described Vyadhi-kshamatva (Resistance to disease manifestation) in two way 1\. Vyadhibalavirodhitvam- Capacity of the body to fight against manifested disease. 2\. Vyadyutpadapratibandhakatvam - Capacity to restrain or withstand the strength (Severity) or Virulence of diseases. Thus Vyadhikshamatva implies a resistance against the loss of the integrity, proportion, and interrelationship amongst the individual\'s doshas( bioenergies ) and dhatus (tissues). Person who is possessing excellence of all Dhatus including mental faculties i.e. sarva sara are endowed with great strength, happiness and resistance to diseases. A synonym for Vyaadhiksamatva which appears in the ancient texts is bala, generally translated as \"strength\" and both terms are used as synonyms. There are **three types of immunity** (Vyaadhiksamatva or Bala) in Ayurveda 1\. Sahaja: Congenital or Natural It is an inherent characteristic property of an individual present since birth. It is because of equilibrium state of Dosas. 2\. Kalaja: Time, Season, Age It is dependent on season and age. Loss of strength is observed in Adanakala, gaining of strength is observed in Visarga Kala and middle age is considered as full of strength. Certain places have stronger and healthier climatic and environmental conditions. For example, places with an abundance of water, ponds, cool and pleasant climatic conditions are kapha-dominating areas and contribute to stronger immunity. **Also, strength is greater in the early morning, spring, and youth than in evening, summer and old age.** 3\. Yuktikruta: Acquired strength is dependent on healthy practices related to diet, activities etc **Ayurveda focuses on three plans for acquiring or enhancing immunity:** i. Proper and suitable Ahara (nutritious diet) ii. Performing exercise (Chesta) with proper method iii. Using different beneficial Rasayana Chikitsa iv. Impact factor: 0.3397/ICV: 4.10 97 v. vi. vii. The essence of saptadhatus (saptdhatu means the seven bodily tissues as from rasa to Shukra dhatu e.g. rasa (plasma and lymph), Rakta (blood cells), Mansa (connective and muscular tissue), Meda (body fats e.g. adipose tissue), Asthi (bones), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra(reproductive systems) is called Ojas and it is the seat for strength, hence called bala Prakrta slesma is termed as Ojas. Ojas is produced and nourished from food substances. But, the conversion of food, in spite of having all nutritive factors of Ojas, Dhatus, Bala and Varna etc. into specific metabolite depends upon the proper functioning of Agni i.e. both Jatharagni and Dhatvagni. Another important factor is srotasa i.e. internal transport system of body. Ojas plays a vital role in all **three stages of life i.e. Utpatti, Sthiti and Pralaya** A. IN UTPATTI- In Fertilization ,In growth and development of Garbha ,In viability or Non viability of Foetus. B. IN STHITI AVASTHA: C. i\. In Maintaince of health: Dosa, Dhatu and Mala are the fundamental units of the body, D. among there, Dosas are said to sustain the body in their normal state. But these Dosas E. even in their physiological state of equilibrium can not sustain body which is devoid of F. Ojas IN STHITI AVASTHA: i\. But these Dosas even in their physiological state of equilibrium can not sustain body which is devoid of Ojas B. IN STHITI AVASTHA: i. In Maintaince of health: Dosa, Dhatu and Mala are the fundamental units of the body, among there, Dosas are said to sustain the body in their normal state. But these Dosas even in their physiological state of equilibrium can not sustain body which is devoid of Ojas. This it can be inferred that Ojas influence the function of physical, sensory, psychic and other higher faculties of the body and maintain the homeostatic condition of body. **Para ojas**: This is astabindu in quantity, if decreases then person will die. **Apara ojas**: which is ardhanjali ojas, if decreases or vitiated manifest abnormalities. The environmental causes which are described by Acaryas are Vata, Atapa and Bhutopaghata etc. Bibheti- which is fearful attitude or phobia, manifested as presence of illogical fear, afraid of particular situation or persons. Dhyayati- continuous illogical worry which one seen as being unnecessarily worried about things which are otherwise trivial in nature. Durmanah- which is bad mantation i.e. being occupied with abnormal thoughts. Vyathitendriya-- is rather a psycho-somatic presentation wherein pain or discomfort is present in the region of heart or in the sense organs for e.g. many a time patients of Ojaksaya complained about ksweda or tinnitus. Daurbalya- it means being feeble, week or of little strength. Factors responsible for enhancement of strength (Bala Vriddhikar Bhava) According to Carak acharya there are **12 factors responsible for increasing Bala(strength) of the body** 1\. Birth in a country where people are naturally strong like sindh pranta. 4\. Excellence in the qualities of seed i.e. sperm and ovum, and asaya i.e. uterus of the parents. 5\. Excellence of the ingested food. 7\. Excellence of the satmya(wholesomeness of various factors responsible for maintenance of the body). 8\. Excellence of the mind. 9\. Favourable deposition of the nature. 10\. Young age of both the parents i.e. they should not be over aged. 11\. Habitual performance of exercise. 12\. Cheerful disposition and immense love for each other. The individuals possessing most of these factors are naturally immune i.e. Vyadhikshama for diseases. **Role of diet in maintaining immunity -** food determines the origin of human beings and forms a chief source of their bodily strength, complexion as well as ojas ref**.** One who donates regularly; impartial in judgement; who is always says truth; endowed with forbearing (forgiveness) nature and one who devoted to learned people. Wholesome food is the only sole cause for the growth of living being. Having proper food at time is said to be best among maintain health. **FOOD ARTICLES WHICH INCREASE OJAS AND BALA** 1\. The food which is light (laghu) cold in potency unctuous and beneficial to body 2\. Jivniya drugs and milk and its product 3\. Food aricles having madhur rasa and amla promotes ojus and strength. 4\. Katu and tikta take away the strength. 5\. the cow milk has got the ten properties like that of ojus thus it is best among vitalizesrs. 6\. Ghrita is mentioned as strength and ojas promoter. 7\. Mamsarasa is meat soup it is nourishing and cordial it is as nectar for those suffering from phthisis, emaciation during convalescence. Eggs of swans, chakora, hens, peacocks and sparrows if consumed immediately promote strength 8\. Among cereals barley yava is balya, wheat is vitalizer, bulk-promoting, stabilizer and heavy 9\. All pulses in general are strength promoter especially masa and tila 10\. Fruits that are sweet in taste are balya and nourishing especially Grapes dates coconut phalgu ripened mango, vataram, abhisuka and akso. Though many pathogens are consistently present in surroundings, they require some essential favourable conditions and susceptibility of the individual. We can have the greater safety from the disease if we possess greater body resistance against the disease. In his definition two significant terms Vyadhibalavirodhitvam and Vyadyutpadapratibandhakatvam. The first term denotes the resisting power of the body (natural immunity) generally non specific type which attempts to defend the body in the first occurrence of any disease. The second term indicates that when the body is encountered by some disease if it happens to meet the same actors in future it will not allow the disease to be manifested because of possessing a specific resistant power. Ojas is the vital essence of all the dhatus from rasa to sukra and it is responsible for the maintainence of tissue elements. These expressions indicate about two aspects of ojas- rasatmaka ojas and dhatusara ojas. Acharya Bhavamishra says Rasa is the main Ojas, when it reaches in various dhatus of the body through usual process; it becomes their integral part and may be considered under the name of those dhatus. All Acharya have proclaimed the qualities of Ojas to be similar to that of kapha. Abnormalities of Ojas mean alteration of Apara Ojas. Healthy lifestyle and balanced mental constitution of parents during pre conception and antenatal period is useful for good Sahaja Bala(innate strength). Kalaja Bala depends on seasonal variation and different stages of age of individual. ** Role of treatments like; Rasayana, Panchkarma etc.** In an autoimmune disease, there is a wrong reaction of our defense mechanism against the body\'s own tissue. Our immune system has a very sophisticated system to keep us disease free. Auto immune diseases occur when the body is working hard to defend against potentially hazardous sub stances our bodies, such as allergens, toxins, infections or food, but does not see the difference between the invaders and our own body cells. Ayurveda describes this in a slightly different way. Ayur veda suggests that the immune system attacks the body\'s own cells do not accidentally**, but it does to defend against a form of harmful metabolites body, ama'.** Amavata is a chronic, progressive auto immune disease. Amavata is a special disease entity in Ayurveda. treatment of Amavata such Ayurvedic management i.e Rasayanchikitsasevan. Ayurveda suggests that the **immune system attacks the body\'s own cells do not accidentally, but it does to defend against a form of harmful metabolites body, genaamd 'Ama'**. Ama is produced in the tis sues that are attacked. There are several rea sons for the emergence of Ama. Ama also respon sible for a number of other conditions, ranging from occasional diarrhea to chronic diseases, Zombade Dinesh N Et Al: Role Of Rasayana Chikitsa In Auto-Immune Disease With Special Reference To Amavata such as diabetes, and an everyday until incur able indigestion SLE (systemic lupus erythe matosus). Autoimmune diseases are usually caused by large amounts of Ama penetrate certain body tissues or physiological systems. In addition, prolonged exposure to poorly digestible food, pollutants, allergenic, toxic synthetic chemicals and drugs is another cause of autoimmune diseases. **Rheumatoid arthritis** is a common autoimmune systemic inflammatory disease affecting worldwide population. Modern treatment has so many side effects so think an alternative approach that is Rasayanchikitsa, which is very effective in its management. **Autoimmune disease-**Oxidative stress plays a role in autoimmune dis eases. It can be compared to a piece of metal rusting and results from the action of damag ing molecules (ie, free radicals), which are a natural byproduct of the body\'s metabolism**. Concept of Ama:** According to Ayurveda "Ama" is re sponsible for most of the diseases we suffer from. The synonym of disease i.e., Amaya is said to be a condition produced by Ama.Tthe improperly digested rasa is Ama. Ama (as per the different classics) can be understood as Undigested food. Unprocessed food. Food which is undergoing the process of digestion. Partially digested. Not only food taken in excess quanti ty cause production of Ama but heavy, cold, dry, impure etc. diets may also cause ama. He also indicates mental factors causing Ama like anger, greed, jealousness, grief, fear etc. In take of wholesome food in proper quantity do not get properly digested when individual is afflicted with these mental conditions. Ama is a single entity but is a generalized term, which can be applied to many malformed substances in the body. The terms Ama and Vata unite to form the word Amavata, (Autoimmune disease) which are the two main pathogenic factors in the causation of disease Amavata. When Vitiated vata and ama simultaneously move towards the trika and sandh is leading to stabdhata of the body. The features of the pain present in the sandhi is typical like Scorpion bite pain and other symptoms like **Rheumatoid arthritis** is a common autoimmune systemic inflammatory disease affecting worldwide population. The interaction of genetic and environmental factors results in an increase of immune reactions, which ultimately lead to the development of synovitis, joint damage, and structural bone damage. These, in turn, lead to pain, disability, and emotional, social, and economic challenges. In modern point of view free radical also play important role in destruction of joint. The increased free radical levels and diminished In Auto-Immune Disease With Special Reference To Amavata tivity of body antioxidant system are also the major responsible factors for the cartilage damage and the disease progression. For this rasayana is better approach because majority of these drugs having dipana, pachana, medhya, antioxidantFree radical plays an important role in pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. A similar type of disabilities mentioned in Ayurveda known as Amavata.Rasayana not on ly slowdown the process of destruction in the joint but also helps in rejuvenation. Rasayana therapy is very effective in reducing symptoms of Amavata due to its Deepana Paachana, Vata-Kapha Shamaka, antioxidant properties, it is very suitable for interrupting the pathogenesis of the disease. Anti-oxidants are the key elements in the immune system which the body uses in order to neutralize the activity of dangerous and over the long term, deadly free radical enemies.
