# Exercise #1-3 ## 1. On his last statement, Qasim had a balance of Rs. 175000 in his checking account. He wrote one cheque for Rs. 45790 and another for Rs. 112921. What is his current balance? **Sol:** * Initial balance = Rs 175000 * Total amount of checks = Rs 45790 + Rs 112921 = Rs 158711 *...

# Exercise #1-3 ## 1. On his last statement, Qasim had a balance of Rs. 175000 in his checking account. He wrote one cheque for Rs. 45790 and another for Rs. 112921. What is his current balance? **Sol:** * Initial balance = Rs 175000 * Total amount of checks = Rs 45790 + Rs 112921 = Rs 158711 * Current balance = 175000 - 158711 = Rs 16289 Ans ## 2. Last week Wajid drove 283.4 km on 16.2 liters of petrol. He says that he averaged about 1.75 km/liter. Is his answer reasonable? Explain. **Sol:** * Distance driven = 283.4 km * Petrol used = 16.2 liters * Average = Distance/Amount of petrol used * Average = 283.4 / 16.2 = 17.49 km/liter Wajid's claim of averaging about 1.75 km is not reasonable because the actual average is significantly higher, around 17.49 km/liter. ## 3. Salma bought 3.2 yards of fabric for a total price of Rs. 139.2. How much did the fabric cost per yard? **Sol:** * Total price = Rs. 139.2 * Total yards = 3.2 * Cost per yard = Total Price / Total yards * Cost per yard = 139.2 / 3.2 = 43.5 Rs ## 4. Momina walks 3.5 km/h. She took a 12 h walk. How far did she walk? **Sol:** * Distance = Speed x Time * Speed = 3.5 km/h * Time = 12 h * Distance = 3.5 x 12 = 42 km Ans ## 5. The hiking club went on a 7-day trip. Each day they hiked between 5.5 and 7.5 miles. It is reasonable to assume that clubbing the days the club hiked: * Less than 35 miles * **Between 35 and 55 miles** * Equally 55 miles * More than 55 miles **Sol:** * Minimum distance hiked per day = 5.5 miles * Maximum distance hiked per day = 7.5 miles * Total minimum distance for 7 days = 7 x 5.5 miles/day = 38.5 miles * Total maximum distance for 7 days = 7 x 7.5 miles/day = 52.5 miles Total distance hiked during the trip is between 38.5 miles and 52.5 miles. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that the total distance hiked by the club during the 7-day trip is between 35 and 55 miles. ## 6. For a class party, the students council purchased 42 balloons at Rs 1.85 each. What is the total amount the student council paid for the balloons? **Sol:** * Number of balloons = 42 * Cost per balloon = R$1.85 * Total amount = Number of balloons x Cost per balloon * Total amount = 42 x 1.85 = R$77.70 Ans ## 7. A group of friends made a 4-yard long rectangular banner. They paid Rs 3.75 per yard for the fabric, and Rs 9 for the firm to go around the banner, 10 yards perimeter. What was the width of the banner? **Sol:** * Length of banner = 4 yards * Cost of fabric per yard = Rs 3.75 * Cost of firm to go around = Rs 9 * Perimeter of the banner = 10 yards * Perimeter = 2 x ( Length + Width ) * 10 = 2 x (4 + w) * 10 = 8+2w * 10-8 = 2w * 2 = 2w * w = 1 yard Ans ## 8. A shoe factory has an asset of Rs 2000000 of which 1/3 is the capital and rest is the debt. Find the amount of capital and dept. (Asset = Capital + debt) **Sol:** * Total asset = Rs 2000000 * Capital = $$1/3$$ x Total asset * Capital = $$1/3$$ x 2000000 = Rs 1200000 * Asset = Capital + dept * 2000000 = 1200000 + dept * 2000000 - 1200000 = dept * Rs 800000 = dept ## 9. The world lowest temperature in past 100 years was recorded to be -89.2 degrees Celcius at Vostok, Antarctica on July 21, 1983. Convert this temperature into Fahrenheit and Kelvin Scales. (F = 9/5 C+32, K = C+273) **Sol:** * Temperature = -89.2 degrees Celcius * In Fahrenheit = F = 9/5 C+32 * F = 9/5 (-89.2)+32 * F = -160.56+32 = -128.56 degrees Fahrenheit * In Kelvin Scale = K = C+273 * K = -89.2 +273 = 183.8 degrees Kelvin So the temperature on July 21, 1983 was approximately: - -128.56 degrees Fahrenheit - 183.8 degrees Kelvin ## 10. A company was penalized by the government act for low quality production. If the company has 3 share holders: Farah, Maryam and Tehreem investing in ratios of 1:2:3 and the amount of penalty is Rs 456868.97. Find the amount of penalty paid by each of 3 share holders. **Sol:** * Investing ratios = 1:2:3 * Let Farah's investment = x * Maryam's investment = 2x * Tehreem's investment = 3x * According to given ratio * Total amount of investment = x + 2x + 3x = 6x * Total penalty amount = Rs 456868.97 * So 6x = 456868.97 * x = 456868.97 / 6 = Rs 76144.83 So, the penalty for: * Farah = x = Rs 76144.83 * Maryam = 2x = 2(76144.83) = Rs 152289.66 * Tehreem = 3x = 3(76144.83) = Rs 228434.49
