Ex. Flammable (Wood) Combustible (Gasoline) Corrosive (Acids) Reacts with Acids (Certain metals) Rusts (Iron) We take advantage of the chemical properties of substances in order to create products we want. Ex. Denim is fire resistant Baking soda causes a cake to rise Bacteria turn milk into cheese Chemical Properties and Change.notebook February 21, 2023 You can tell it is a chemical change because the new substance produced has different properties (colour, texture, etc). Ash from a fire is white Rust is orange and flaky Signs of Chemical Change 1. A new colour appears 2. Heat and Light is given off (flame) 3. Bubbles of gas are formed when not heated 4. A precipitate forms (a solid material appears when 2 liquids combine) 5. The change is difficult to reverse Note: Some of the above changes might also accompany physical changes. Think about whether a new substance is formed. Examples: A light bulb gives off light and heat, but it isn't altered so it is physical Boiling water creates bubbles, but it is evaporation so it is physical Chemical Properties and Change.notebook February 21, 2023 Demos Chemical and Physical Change Demos Phys/Chem Starting Substances Properties Observations Change?
