Apply the different guidelines in developing a data collection tool DATA COLLECTION The data collection process gives It will then discuss the whole process of us an overview of the significant data collection, including the different role of variables during the modes of collecting data, the various development of the data collection issues that need to be addressed, and the guidelines to be considered when tools and data analysis. developing data collection tools. SIGNIFICANT ROLE OF VARIABLES There are three phases in the research process in which the issue of defining research variables needs to be seriously considered. These are during: 1. Formulation of research objectives (discussed in Module 2); 2. Development of data collection tools; and 3. Data analysis. What is a variable? DEFINITION OF VARIABLES A variable is any characteristic, number, or quantity that can be measured or counted. Variables are essential components of research studies, as they represent the elements that researchers are interested in examining, manipulating, or observing. Variables can vary among subjects or over time, and they can be classified into different types based on their roles in research. DEFINITION OF VARIABLES The main questions to be answered when defining variables are: a) What variables are needed for this research? b) What specific data elements need to be collected to measure the variable? DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VARIABLES AND DATA ELEMENTS DEVELOPMENT OF DATA COLLECTION TOOL ⮚ Involves identifying data elements needed to measure or compute the variable or indicator of interest Weight Nutritional Age Status Sex Height DEVELOPMENT OF DATA COLLECTION TOOL ⮚ Involves developing operational definitions of variables ⮚ Involves selecting an indicator which is the most relevant to the phenomenon or outcome considered grade per course Student’s grades for selected Grade courses taken weighted average for all courses taken a.
