BIOL 150: Cell Biology Contact Information Instructor: Michelle Dubien Email: [email protected] Biotechnology Program Coordinator Candace Scott Email: [email protected] Important Information This is a fun course that teaches you the fundamentals you need to advance in biotechnology. You will also learn important skills such as taking feedback, critical thinking, professionalism and team work Feeling anxious? If there is something about yourself that you feel I should be aware of, to help you learn better, please let me know Class Times and Locations Monday 13:30 – 14:30 Rm 00300 Thursday 17:30 – 19:30 Rm 12030 Course Description An introductory lecture based course for Biotechnology students that covers the biological and chemical principles of the cell with reference to energy flow, structure and function, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, genetics and cell diversity. Learning Outcomes Define basic principles of biological chemistry to determine the roles of atoms, molecules and chemical reactions in homeostasis. Describe normal cellular structure and function to determine the impact of an altered environment on cellular output. Learning Outcomes Explain energy transformations in cellular respiration to further define the fermentation process. Explain the mechanism of heredity, including eukaryotic cell reproduction and basic principles of genetics to determine how biotechnology can be used to manipulate these. Explain the main functions of each of the body organ systems to provide a basis for defining disease and disease related mechanisms. More Course Info... No textbook – Any cell biology book can serve as a supplemental reference. – Internet is full of great resources. Lecture slides available before class on Blackboard (http://blackboard.sl.on.ca/) Attendance Policies Attendance and participation are important to your success… You are expected to attend each class as scheduled If I am ill, lecture may switch to a Teams meeting, or asynchronous If you are ill, lecture notes will be available on Blackboard under the “By Week” tab Test Days Students are expected to write the tests during the scheduled times.
