Unit 4 The cardiovascular system The heart 1. State the components and the overall function of the cardiovascular system Components heart: a muscular pump with 4 chambers that work together to pump blood. The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs while the left side pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Located in the thoracic cavity. blood vessels: tubes which transport blood Arteries: carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body tissues Veins: return deoxygenated blood to the heart from the body Capillaries: tiny vessels that exchange oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients & waste between blood & tissues blood: the uid that plans through this system, carrying oxygen, nutrients& waste Overall function of the cardiovascular system The cardiovascular systems overall function is to deliver oxygen & nutrients to cells & tissues while removing carbon dioxide and waste products. it also helps regulate body tempter & maintain uid balance 2. State the location, size, & position of the heart Location: thoracic cavity, within the mediastinum in the area between the lungs Size: size of a persons st, 12 cm long, 8 cm wide, 6cm thick Position: the heart is tilted tightly, with the base (top) pointing toward the right shoulder and the apex (bottom) pointing toward the left hip, resting just above diaphragm 3. Identify the location of the apex and base of the heart Apex: located at the bottom of the heart, pointing downward & to the left. Fifth intercostal space near the left midline of the chest. Base: located at the top of the heart, upward to the right shoulder,at the level of the second rib, where major blood vessels enter & exit fl fi fl
