The American land and people The US consist of 50 states and covers 3.7 million square miles, making it the 3rd largest country in the world. flying is often the most practical way to travel between cities. the climate and landscape are varied. the population isn't evenly disturbed and there is a racial mix, but California and Texas have more people of Hispanic origin. The US is traditionally divided into 5 regions.: -New England in the North-east, smallest regions and has a cold climate. Boston is the major city. The Pilgrim Fathers settled in the area, and the American Revolution began there. -the Mid Atlantic states lie along the Atlantic Ocean to the south of New England. Major cities include: New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington DC, which is the capital of the US. The East Coast is the country's main business area. To other Americans they seem to have a fast and aggressive lifestyle. -The states of the Middle West include the Wheat Belt and the Corn Belt. The industrial cities of Chicago and Detroit are considered liberal, most Midwesterners are thought to be conservative. People from the East Coast laugh about the old-fashioned ways of Midwesterners but respect their concern for family values and religion. -The people int the South are traditionally very religious, and the region is often called the Bible Belt. It has a hot climate, meaning they have a slower lifestyle, so other Americans sometimes think that they're lazy. They also criticize the South for its past treatment of slaves. This has changed now, they have good jobs in lively cities like Atlanta. -The West includes the cities of Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hollywood and Salt Lake City. Americans consider the West to be a place of new beginning and opportunities. A young country America has a comparatively short history, 1776 is considered to be the beginning of the country's independent history. There are some historical places like Ford's Theatre, where President Lincoln was killed, and Valley Forge, which was important in the War of Independence. Youth and new things are also valued. To many people it is the future that matters, not the past. Change is a positive feature in the US. The country often seems exciting, fast-moving and a place full of opportunity which is the American Dream. use for their being and other phrases
