IONS MELC 8 SECOND QUARTER MOST ESSENTIAL 08 LEARNING COMPETENCY Explain how ions are formed. TABLE OF CONTENTS 01 02 03 WHAT IS AN ION? HOW ARE IONS WHAT ARE THE FORMED? TYPES OF ION? 04 05 HOW ARE IONS HOW DO WE WRITE NAMED? CHEMICAL FORMULA WITH IONS WHAT IS AN ION? An ion is any atom or molecule with a net charge, either positive or negative. HOW ARE IONS FORMED? THE TYPES OF ION? WHAT ARE Ions are formed when CATION a neutral atom lose or A positive ion; gain one or more produced when one electorn. 01 or more electrons are lost from a neutral atom. ? ANION A negatively charged ion; produced when a 02 neutral atom gains one or more extra electrons. HOW DOES THE PERIODIC TABLE HELP US WHAT TYPE OF ION IS FORMED BY A GIVEN ATOM? Oxidation Number the total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in order to form a chemical bond with another atom. HOW DO WE NAME IONS? 01 NEUTRAL CATION CATION ATOM A cation is Na (Sodium) Sodium ion/cation named simply by Ca (Calcium) Calcium ion/cation adding the term Al (Aluminum) Aluminum ion/cation “ion” after the Li (Lithium) name of the P (Phosphorus) parent atom. HOW DO WE NAME IONS? NEUTRAL ANION 02 ATOM F (Fluorine) fluoride ion ANION Anions are named B (Bromine) bromide ion O (Oxygen) oxide ion by taking the root S (Sulfur) sulfide ion name of the atom I (Iodine) and changing the (P) Phosphorus ending with –ide. HOW DO WE WRITE THE CHEMICAL FORMULA OF IONIC COMPOUNDS? The crisscross method is a method of finding out the chemical formula of a metal and non-metal that combine to form an ionic bond. To use this method, the absolute value of the oxidation number of the first ion is used as the subscript of the second, and vice versa. The subscripts are then reduced by the greatest common factor. HOW DO WE WRITE THE CHEMICAL FORMULA OF IONIC COMPOUNDS? Example 1. Sodium Chloride 2. Magnesium Chloride 3. Barium Sulfide HOW DO WE WRITE THE CHEMICAL FORMULA OF IONIC COMPOUNDS? Write the chemical formula of the ff. ionic compounds: 1. Calcium Oxide 2. Magnesium Nitride 3. Potassium Chloride
