Prepare equipment : Lubricant, sterile gloves, draping sheet. 2. Welcome the woman 3. Explain procedure to her 4. Get informed consent 5. Ensure empty bladder 6. Position the woman on the examination table 7. Provide privacy& cover with draping sheet. 8. Wash hands 9. Do an abdominal assessment and auscultate the fetal heart sound. 10. Set up the trolley and open the vaginal examination pack 11. Put on gloves 12. Swab vulva from front to back 13. Use individual sterile lubricating gel 14. Use ‘dirty’ hand to hold labia apart 15. Then gently insert ‘clean’ fingers downwards and backwards into the vagina. 16. Turn the sensitive pad upwards towards cervix. 17. Locate the os by sweeping fingers side to side. 18. Assess for effacement, consistency of cervix, dilatation, presence of membranes if ruptured, position and station of presenting part. Identify for any moulding and caput. 19. Remove the hand 20. Remove the gloves and discard 21. Reassess the FHS. 22. Leave the mother in comfortable position 23. Discuss the findings with mother. 24. Replace the articles 25. Document the procedure 26. Replace equipment 27.
