# Liver Histology ## Prepared by Dr. Ahmed A. Morsi Asist Prof of Histology & Cell biology ## Learning objectives: By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1. Define classic hepatic lobule. 2. Describe the organization of liver cells within the classic hepatic lobule 3. Define space of Disse & its contents ## Liver histology - Histologically, the liver is formed of 2 main parts, stroma and parenchyma. ### I. Stroma: a) Capsule (Glisson's capsule): thin CT layer surround the liver. b) Trabeculae: CT septae arise from the capsule and divide liver into lobules. In human, The CT septa is so thin and lobulation is not clear while in certain animal species e.g camel and pig, the lobulation is clear and well defined due to thick CT septae. c) Reticular CT: background of organ and stained with silver ### II. Parenchyma: Hepatocytes (liver cell) are the structural and functional units of the liver. Liver cells are arranged in a well organized manner giving rise to the **Classic Hepatic Lobule:** - Hexagonal mass of liver tissue drained centrally via the central vein and shows portal triads in the portal areas located at the corners of the lobule. - The portal tract (portal area): contains branches of: 1. Portal vein 2. Hepatic artery 3. Bile duct 4. Lymphatic vessels - Hepatocytes are arranged in radial cords or plates (1-2 cell thickness) radiating from the central vein. ## 3 D diagram of classic hepatic lobule - **Functional units** Hepatocytes ### **Space of Disse:** - Narrow space located between the endothelial lining of the blood sinusoid and surface of hepatocytes: - It contains: 1. Long microvilli projecting from liver cells 2. Ito's cells (stellate cells) 3. Fat cells 4. Plasma 5. Nerve fibers ## Reference: - Junqueira's Basic Histology: Text and atlas, 13th Edition, 2013. Anthony L. Mescher The document is a presentation about liver histology. It was prepared by Dr. Ahmed A. Morsi. The document describes the components of the liver and provides information on their function and appearance. The presentation also contains several diagrams illustrating different aspects of the liver.
