# Social Work Terms ## 1. The Agency The agency is the official recognized place where the social worker can perform his defined roles and provide services to the clients who have the right to obtain. ## 2. The Client The word client is generally used to describe the person who comes to a social worker asking for help because he has a problem and he is not able to solve it. ## 3. The Social Worker The social worker is the person whose professional social work and who is prepared theoretically and practically in one of the scientific educational institutions of social work. ## 4. Social Work Social work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to the goal. ## 5. Social Group Work Social group work is the method of social work in which the worker helps the members to use each other and the group to strengthen their interaction and achieve their goals. ## 6. Community Organization Community organization is the method of social work connected with any or all the following objectives: * Helping people to deal more effectively with their problems and objectives. * Bringing about changes in community and group relationships. ## 7. Social Case Work Social case work is the method of social work through which one individual (the caseworker) helps another (the client) to take steps towards achieving some personal or social goals by utilizing the resources available to the client or the social resources supplied by the environment (community), including the agency through which he is receiving help. ## 8. Group Work Group work is a method of working with people in groups of two or more people for the enhancement of social functioning and for the achievement of socially desirable goals. ## 9. Group Worker The person who is prepared scientifically and professionally in the college or institute of social work for four years, and he can work with the individual through groups. ## 10. Group Goals Group purposes are often general. In group goals, the agency purpose, the goals of the group members, the goals and objectives of the group worker are ordinarily incorporated. ## 11. Leadership of Group Leadership means the process of leading the group to the correct ways. The group leader must be chosen by the members' election in the beginning of the group life. The group worker and members put the duties and tasks of the group leader. ## 12. Group Member A group member is the individual who joined the group by his decision. Sometimes the member must participate in the group life through the responsibilities and the group interaction. ## 13. Membership Membership means that every member likes to satisfy his needs and desires and he can choose the kind of group which relates to his condition. We must know that there are involuntary and voluntary memberships, but every member must relate to the goals of his group. ## 14. Program Program in group work means all the activities, interaction relations through the group life. The group worker helps the members and the group to design the program and execute it. It is very important to discuss the members' thoughts, desires and how they can use their abilities. ## 15. Professional Relationship in Group Work Professional relationship means trust, respect, freedom and humanity in dealing with members in the form of the institution functions and goals of the group worker. ## 16. Values and Ethics Basic values and ethics group work evolves from the philosophy of social work, religion, our experiences of the practice of group work. Examples of our values and ethics such as: respecting of human needs of every member, democracy through group life, acceptance of the members and the group, understanding of members self-determination of every one and the groups as a whole and other values and ethics. ## 17. Group Organization Every group must organize their life by limiting the responsibility of every member. The group by helping the group worker can put group organization. Group organizations are different from group to other. ## 18. Task Group A task group means limit or special acts or working and must form the group these acts and may use the life of the group to attain to the end. The member of the task group cannot satisfy any desires or hopes from the group. ## 19. The Principle The principle is a basic factor or law, and the principle is generalizations based upon special cases. ## 20. The Skills The skills are the uses of the abilities of every professional in the social work profession in another way. The skills in the ability of using the abilities of the social worker, by a successful way, in practice. ## 21. Expression Tools of Group Work The Meaning of expression of group work is the tool in which the members and group work can find it in the field, easily, and sometimes the tool can help the member to express themselves and helps the group and the member to participate in different group situations. ## 22. The Symposium Symposium means the participation from different experts in one field. The members can participate by questions, comments and by their experiences. ## 23. The Obstacles in Group Work The obstacles refer to any let or hindrance in the group situation to the discovery and use of resources, which is relatively uncommon, but arises directly out of the need to consider resource as the prime reason for the existence of all groups. ## 24. Sub-group Two or three way by more, gathered for special resources such as friendship or specific interest sub-groups may be as a positive unit or active. This group formed through group life group worker must deal with sub-groups to make inclusion in the whole group. ## 25. Group Interaction The process of group interaction is very important through group life. Interaction means acts and reacts of the members, group, and group worker, which are related to the group goals in different situations. ### Coordination The process of working together to attain the goals without conflict or duplication the process of coordination help the agencies to support in soles with the people coordination different from the cooperation. This is a process of working together to accomplish a given result but coordinating combine from group goals and systems to some people or groups to attain their goals. ### Planning This process relating with the future action In the-fields of social work, the representative of the community through discussions and meetings. The planning process depends upon the data, facts, reality, experiences studying of the problems and goals we need to attain. ### Agency Goals Agency goals means what agency try to attain as a public concern for social services and for helping people. These goals must relate to the systems of the agency. ### The Remedial Model This model for treatment as a clinical oriented. The social worker applies skills and knowledge in helping individuals in different institutions used this model such as mental hospitals, family services and other institutions. ### Intervention This process begins with the first steps of client, the helping process determine with the social worker. Intervention depends upon the clients or members needs, the social worker must use special skills such as interview, speech, listening, acceptance of the client or members and other skills of intervention ### Research Research is an important component in social work research, looking for facts about individuals, groups, social worker programs, leadership. Research follow scientific steps to attain the results which we can use it to develop the practice. There are different kinds of researches such as analysis research, experimental research. ### Recreation Recreation is one of the activities of groups, recreation attain to help the individual and groups to feel happy and spend fine time through following special systems. There are special institutions for recreation, which may be governmental or non-governmental associations. ### Group Discussion Group discussion is one of the expression tools of group work, social worker can use group discussion to study the group desires or problems, and in the same time social worker can use it for treatment or to modify some sides in the personality of the individuals.
