SPIRITUAL SELF JOSEPH E. RUBIO SPIRITUAL SELF The spirit and the soul are two important terms and have distinction that need to be recognized. SPIRITUAL SELF Pneuma or ruach – spirit in a Hebrew language, Greek which means breath(esp the breath of life) SPIRITUAL SELF The spirit is described as the disposition of an individual, a person’s habitual attitudes, a mans supernatural power which comes from God. It is part of us through which all life and power of God flow. It is a life- giving part of man ( Jas. 2.26) SPIRITUAL SELF nephesh – in Hebrew or Greek, psyche, meaning, throat or neck, which means human life, the animating principle of human nature. SPIRITUAL SELF Modern psychology – it is the will-mind, the seat of emotion, conscience. SPIRITUAL SELF Both soul and spirit means life. But soul (nephesh-psyche)stands for natural man, while spirit (ruach - pneuma) is the ethical factor which add the new dimension of relationship with God. SPIRITUAL SELF espirito or espiritu, a loan word used by the Filipinos for spirit, which is in visayas term, “ ginhawa”, in tagalaog “hininga” and in ilokano, “anges” SPIRITUAL SELF Soul is a non-physical aspect of the person, a complexity of human attributes that manifests as consciousness, thought, feeling and will, regarded on the distinction of the physical body. SPIRITUAL SELF The innermost aspect of the person which signifies the spiritual principle in him. “ the breath of life”. SPIRITUAL SELF The soul according to indigenous Filipino, kaluluwa, kararawa, kadkadduwa , all come from root word “duwa”, mean two. Because the soul has two existences – – one physical is that is connected to the human body and its life – the other spiritual where it exists on its own. SPIRITUAL SELF Kadkadduwa-kadduwa – means companion, “kad” intensifies the nature of companionship or inseparable partner, an attached companion of the living person. SPIRITUAL SELF Kaluluwa in tagalog; Gimokud the Bagobos; Makatu,, in Bukidnons; Kadkadduwa or kararwa –inside the physical body); SPIRITUAL SELF Dungan, in ilonggos-if person is alive, kalag, if the person is dead; Dungan, in Visayans, (willpower) not normally seen by the human eye. It may leave the body voluntarily when the person is asleep. Whatever happens to the dungan happens to the physical body. SPIRITUAL SELF Kaluha, soul in cebuanos, Kalag, karadwa – in Mindoro(Demetrio et al, 2011) ab-abiik – from kankayas in cordillera- used for the spiritual self which is also applicable to trees, stones, rivers, etc., SPIRITUAL SELF Ikararua , Ibanag soul, which has the role of giving directions and wholeness to the man. Kararwa – or the soul proper, the vital element in man. It can leave only after death SPIRITUAL SELF FOUR SOUL ANIMATE THE BODY IN EARLY ILOKANO BELIEF: 2. Karkarma – or second soul can leaveth body when one is frightened, or can be stolen from the body when the person goes to isolated places. If the soul fail to return the owner becomes insane. It also stands for vigor, strength or power, it also the mind and reason. Counterpart of what the Greek referred to as psyche. SPIRITUAL SELF FOUR SOUL ANIMATE THE BODY IN EARLY ILOKANO BELIEF: 3. Aniwaas(aningaas or alingaas) – third soul can leave the body during asleep and visit the places which the person who owns it frequents when awake. If he wakes up, he may lose his aniwaas, and become insane. SPIRITUAL SELF FOUR SOUL ANIMATE THE BODY IN EARLY ILOKANO BELIEF: 4. Araria_al-alia) our forth soul , is liberated soul of the dead. It is the soul that coes down t oearth to visit its relatives and friends, asking them to pray or perform a duty it failed to do in life. The howling of dogs announces the presence of an ar-aria/al-alia. SPIRITUAL SELF Viktor Frankl – finding and creating meaning: he believe that in life there is an existential vacuum, which means that life is empty, meaningless, purposeless, aimless, adrift, etc.because of this existential vacuum, we fill our lives with pleasure, eating beyond all necessity or even having promiscuous sex. SPIRITUAL SELF THREE WAYS OF DISCOVERING MEANING IN LIFE: 1. Experiential values – something or someone we value. Ex. the love we feel towards another. Family relative, friends, workmates SPIRITUAL SELF THREE WAYS OF DISCOVERING MEANING IN LIFE: 2. Creative values – the traditional existential idea by providing oneself with meaning by becoming involved in one’s project, in the project of one;s own life. E. creativity and passion in art, music, invention and work. SPIRITUAL SELF THREE WAYS OF DISCOVERING MEANING IN LIFE: 3. Attitudinal values – practicing values such as compassion, bravely, a good sense of humor, etc. SPIRITUAL SELF Frankl’s most famous example is achieving meaning by way of suffering. The ultimate goal is transcendence, in the spiritual reals. It is a reference to God, a reference to religion. SPIRITUAL SELF The practice of religion – beneficial to individuals, families, states and the nation. It creates normal community to which people experience a sense of belonging. It provides rites of passage as in the case of sacraments in Christianity. SPIRITUAL SELF Rituals – patterned of behavior that have something to do with the supernatural realm. -they are performed in a repetitive nature -They can be religious or secular SPIRITUAL SELF - People worldwide engage in religious rituals that require amount of time or personal sacrifice. SPIRITUAL SELF Witchcraft - Kulam – refers to an idea that certain people have an inborn power to harness spirits or energies for specific purpose. - Considered as evil - Like sorcery, it is seen as magic or special power that worked for illegal or antisocial end. SPIRITUAL SELF In conclusion: Submission to practice such as magic, kulam, and other of their kind may not lead us to the “ ONE,TRUE GOD”. The source of all power. May you truly find meaning as you continue you life’s journey, guided by Jesus, the Incarnate Word of God.
