AUTHOR’S PURPOSES What is your intention and reason writing an article? The Three most Common Purposes in Writing: 01 To INFORM 02 To PERSUADE 03 To ENTERTAIN Writing to INFORM The author provides the reader with essential information about facts, people, or events. Writing to PERSUADE The author aims to encourage the readers to believe in his or her stand on an issue. Topics under this purpose are usually debatable and readers may take different views. For instance, a columnist would like to convince his or her readers to believe in his or her view that the "No Homework Policy" helps students live a more balanced a academic lite. Writing to ENTERTAIN The author aims to amuse the readers. To this end, he or she will use an amusing story and expound on it by using anecdotes, observations, and humor. Generally, fiction is a source entertainment for most readers, but it does not mean that stories are not sources of information. In fact, telling stories and anecdotes can be an effective way of convincing readers. However, the main intention of the author in writing stories is to entertain.
