Information Sheet Quarter 2 Lesson 3 LO 2.4 2.4 Use calculation involving fractions, percentages and mixed numbers to complete workplace tasks What are fractions? When a whole is divided into equal pieces, if fewer equal pieces are needed to make up the whole, then each piece must be larger. When two positive fractions have the same numerator, they represent the same number of parts, but in the fraction with the smaller denominator, the parts are larger. What are mixed numbers? Math Term Definition. Mixed number. A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction. Here are a few mixed numbers: 1 1/2 1 1/3 2 1/2 2 2/5 1 4/5 You can convert a mixed number to an improper fraction by finding the number of unit fractions in the whole number and then adding the fractional part of the whole number. What are percentages? (When you are doing actual math, you need to use actual numbers. Always convert the percentages to decimals!) Then, since "sixteen percent OF fourteen hundred" tells you to multiply the 0.16 and the 1400, you get: (0.16)(1400) = 224.
