Animal Cells and Tissues SNC 2D1 Skin is our body’s largest organ It is composed of a variety of specialized tissues and cells. Most of the 75-100 trillion cells that make up the human body are specialized to do certain tasks. 3 factors that influence cell differentiation: 1. contents of the cell’s cytoplasm (e.g., vacuole size, mitochondrion number, etc.) 2. environmental conditions (e.g., temperature) 3. neighbouring cells Tissue: a cluster of similar cells that share the same specialized structure and function. There are only four main types of tissue: 1. Epithelial 2. Muscle 3. Nervous 4. Connective Epithelial Tissue Skin Epithelial Columnar Epithelial Muscle Tissue Skeletal Muscle Smooth Muscle Cardiac Muscle Nervous Tissue Nervous Tissue Connective Tissue Bone Fat Blood Stem Cell: an unspecialized cell that can produce various specialized cells What is the difference between pluripotent and totipotent stem cells? Embryonic stem cells are unspecialized cells that can become any one of an organism’s body cells, making them valuable for research and medical treatment. What ethical issues are associated with stem cell research? What type of tissue attaches to bone making it possible to move? Skeletal Muscle What type of tissue is made of long finger-like projections? Nervous What type of tissue is shown in the image below? Smooth Muscle What type of tissue is used for padding and cushioning organs? Connective - Fat What type of tissue is shown in the image below? Connective - Blood What type of tissue lines the intestine? Columnar Epithelial Know your tissues – structure and function!
