UST SHS Health Allied – Research 1 Ma. Patricia Amor Ausan – 12HA13 USES AND PURPOSES OF RESEARCH Basic Research - more on crea/ng theories and understanding Exploratory & Descrip/ve Exploratory Research Inves/gates research ques/ons that have not been studied in depth Two categories: those that make a tenta/ve first analysis of a new topic (the first one) those that propose new ideas or generate new hypotheses on an old topic (the added theories aGer) OGen lay the groundwork for future analysis Data tends to be qualita/ve Not intended to provide conclusive evidence Goals: formulate problems, clarify concepts, and form hypothesis Example: Understanding the rela/vely new phenomenon of college students' addic/ons to their electronic gadgets Doesn’t have a structure/standard because it’s new Limited informa/on only DescripAve Research Describe people, products, and situaAons Usually have one or more guiding research ques/ons but generally are not driven by structured research hypotheses Data may be qualita/ve or quan/ta/ve quan/ = frequency/summary (no comparing/cause and effects) Used to obtain informa/on concerning the current status of the phenomena and to describe "what exists" with respect to variables or condi/ons in a situa/on Example: descrip/ve study of college students' addic/ons to their electronic gadgets might aim to describe paUerns in how many hours students use gadgets or which sorts of gadgets students tend to use most regularly Interven/ons, more in general Applied Research - answers problems by using the theories of basic research Impact Assessment, Evalua/on, Ac/on EvaluaAon Research Program Evalua/on or Evalua/ve Research A systema/c analysis that evaluates whether an object, prac/ce, ac/vity, system, program or strategy is worth the effort, Ame, money, and resources spent to achieve a goal Main purpose: to understand whether a process or strategy has delivered the desired results which will be used for decision making Uses quan/ta/ve and/or qualita/ve research methods GeZng feedback from the users and make decisions on the products Example: New Wasabi toothpaste is tested before given to the audience, Are E-books effec/ve for students More on evalua/ng tools AcAon Research Itera/ve or cyclical in nature Intended to foster deeper understanding of a given situa/on, star/ng with conceptualizing and par/cularizing the problem and moving through several interven/ons and evalua/ons UST SHS Health Allied – Research 1 Ma. Patricia Amor Ausan – 12HA13 Like Evalua/on Research but involves planning, ac/on/implementa/on, observe, make plans to improve the problem — cycle Example: Home-based learning for the pandemic, then Blended-learning, in-between there became Full On-site classes — observes if the results are effec/ve Impact Assessment Focuses on the effects of the interven/on Looking at the effects of the products to the users (opposite of evalua/on research) May have a posi/ve or nega/ve impact
